I used to hit up this spot when I lived there, old German fellow ran it and he made everything in house, by hand. Good shit!

There is a great German deli and restaurant that also sells German baked goods in Harker Heights, which is near Killeen. Not in the Austin area but only an hour or so away.

Two interesting thoughts: Central Market has some good German deli product from Schaller and Weber – gelbwurst, Black Kassel (a great smoked salami), leberkase, pinkelwurst (yes I’m reading from their app), pâté, braunshwager, kraut, brats and knackwurst… great rye breads, mustards, Bavarian emmentaler (for the recent German week they bought 25% of one town’s production in a few days and the town apparently had a party). Not a CM employee but I recommend them enough I think I should be on commission.
Second: Borderless European Market – this is more Eastern European but is worth your trip at least once to see what they have.
Aside – family was Latvian with some Germanic heritage from the northern crusades. Grew up loving German and some Eastern European foods.
Edit – I need to hit up that Harker Heights recommendation. Sounds terrific.

Used to be a German deli up in DFW but didn’t last but a few years… You’ll do best to just order from them directly and have it shipped. This past October Central Market did a “Oktoberfest” and had Schaller & Weber available so I stocked up on Nürnberger Rostbratwurst so I didn’t have to pay for shipping… They may have some brats left.
For Central Texas to be so proud of their German heritage It’s really sparse. The German Texan Heritage Society will have their Weinachtsmarkt And there will be some German imports for ornaments and gifts but … Do not expect any authentic German food. It’s quite disappointing.

It’s more of a butcher, but doesn’t Hutto Westphalia market have a deli section?

Schilo’s in downtown San Antonio is the real deal, and spectacularly good. Not exactly “in the area,” but infinitely better than anything you’ll find in Austin.

The type of food you want exists here but not in that type of deli format.
Krause’s Cafe in New Braunfels Der Lindenbaum in Fredericksburg Shilo’s in San Antonio
We don’t even have a proper Jewish/Kosher Deli in this town anymore besides the one in HEB Far West. Just doesn’t exist here.

Granzin’s meat market in New Braunfels is closest to Austin.
