Hot take?

Arduous slog of chewing through inches of conflicting texture?

I don’t know, it sounds like this person just might not like sandwiches much? The different textures and flavors all coming together as one is the best thing about a good sandwich.

  2. Food is balance, vinegar and fat, salt and sweet, etc. more is not always better

Yes! I need more black olives and onions to combine with the fats from the meat and cheese!

  4. I always like a good balance of meat and bread.

To paraphrase Mitch Hedberg, too much meat on a sandwich makes it feel like you’re eating a cow with a cracker on either side.

Ive learned that lettuce and tomato is a must

    Depends on the sandwich.

Edit: For example there is no such thing as too much meat on a Reuben.

The bread that cuts the roof of my mouth or causes my husband to not be able to swallow it properly is more of an issue than the meat, as long as it sliced thinly. But I’ve always felt the inside was more important than the outside.

Not a hot take at all. At least I hope not.

I don’t know of it’s a sign of getting older, but I do think it’s a sign of a good sandwich.

I’ve never understood overstuffed sandwiches. It’s a sandwich for a reason that has several ingredients–otherwise just stuff a 1/4 lb of meat in your mouth and call it a day.

Overstuffed Rubens in particular are a no go for me. If I just want to taste corned beef/pastrami, I’ll do that. Otherwise, there should be balance.

Nah as a kid it was a mound if meat. I can taste and understand all the different things as an adult.

So I must be young still, tell my kids, they don’t believe me!

Yep, delicious meats and cheeses need balanced with proper bread, texture, acid and a little sweetness.

This why we sometimes toast bread or add a little sugar to a relish.

It’s why a Philly tastes better with caramelized onions and why a muffuletta has olive salad on it.

  12. Well it’s from Rita Repulsive so take with a grain of salt

we had this deli at the end of our street in college that made pretty good cheap sandwiches. my friend and I used to go and get this prosciutto sandwich that they made on a panini or something.

one day my friend ordered the prosciutto sandwich, and the very stoned kid working the counter asked my friend what kind of sandwich he wanted it as. we had never been asked this before – it was always a panini. we asked him what he meant by “what kind of sandwich”.

he said “i dunno, like panini, wheat bread, a sub, footlong….”

“same price for any of them?”

    “yeah.”

we looked at each other and he ordered the footlong. we watched this dude put probably $60 of prosciutto on this thing. we took it home and a few bites in I asked how it was. he said it was like trying to chew through leather and the salt levels were off the charts. this was how we both learned that more of something does not make it better. on the plus side, i think we ended up having prosciutto for a little while.

I hate a pile of meat with nothing breaking it up
