(1) The eel and ramen
(2) They were both part of a very generous gift box from u/katharsys2009 – ignore Cosmo – he’s stoned on Rural Illinois’ Best Organic Catnip (which was also in the box)
(3) Eel tin close up – this is canned sardines, after all 😂
(4) The meal – food for what ails ya
(5-6) Opened eel tin with the sauce poured off and of course I removed the spines
(7-9) Making the ramen: I followed the package directions until I didn’t – instead of the spicy oil I added the eel tin sauce
(10-11) I used 1/2 the eel tin, so I have some leftover eel for lunch tomorrow –
(12-14) Making the seasoned bok choy – trim off bottoms of baby bok choy bundles and separate the leaves. Blanch in boiled water 30 seconds. Heat some neutral oil in a wok and add 1 tbsp each grated fresh ginger and garlic. Saute until the leaves are tender. Add 1 tbsp mushroom soy sauce and 2 tsp sesame oil.
(15) Close up of the soup – since I used 1/2 the eel I decided to add some more protein with an over medium egg.
(16) The bite – yumm

Thank you again, my wonderful Secret Santa from Illinois u/katharsys2009!
This Old Fisherman eel tin is one of my earliest tins I tried, and a perennial favorite. It’s in a lovely medium-thick 5-spice sauce that’s delightful with rice, over vegetables or stirred into soup.
It was an easy tin to pair with these spicy seafood noodles, and elevated the whole dish. I added an egg because I love an egg with my ramen, and all my Nitamago eggs are gone (note to self: MAKE MORE).
The eel sauce added a sweetness to the broth, and the 5 spice paired perfectly with the sweet seafood flavors in the broth packet. Sauteed baby bok choy have a pop of bitterness to balance the whole meal, while the egg added richness and eggy goodness.
In all, a delightful meal!
11/10 will buy this eel tin again. It’s one of my favorites and always has a home in my pantry.
