Move Right In: Montclair

A booming art scene, rich dining options and a close-knit community are among the reasons you should move to the North Jersey town of Montclair.

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve you, to cook for you, and to share in the simple joys of a good meal surrounded by good company,” Scala del Nonna posted. The closing date for the eatery located at 32 Church St. is Sunday, Feb. 16.

The Italian restaurant Scala del Nonna in Montclair will be closing its doors after serving customers for 11 years as they announce their farewell in an Instagram post.

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve you, to cook for you, and to share in the simple joys of a good meal surrounded by good company. Your support and loyalty have meant the world to us, and there are truly no words that can express our gratitude,” said the restaurant in its announcement.

The closing date for the eatery located at 32 Church St. is Sunday, Feb. 16.

Scala del Nonna describes its food as a “modern take on classic Italian cooking.” Chef Michael Cetrulo, a Wayne native, named the restaurant, translated to “in grandmother’s footsteps” in English, as a tribute to the cooking he learned growing up.

Those at Scala del Nonna treated their customers like family. “We have watched your families grow, celebrated your milestones, toasted to your successes, and even grieved alongside you in difficult times. You have filled our dining room with stories, traditions, and moments that we will cherish forever,” the restaurant posted.

Cetrulo owns other locations that serve the same famous Italian dishes, which are located in Chatham, Montville and New York City. Scalini Fedeli is the name of their other locations. Their Chatham restaurant was named the state’s best special-occasion restaurant by The Daily Meal in 2020.

The loyal customers of the Montclair restaurant are deeply saddened by the announcement of the closing.

“My absolute favorite restaurant. My family, friends and I have celebrated so many wonderful milestones there. The food was always delicious and Sally always treated us with the utmost kindness, as well as the servers,” said one person who commented on the restaurant’s goodbye post on Instagram.

“This makes so me sad! Such a truly amazing restaurant that will be deeply missed! Always the best food and warm loving environment,” read another comment.

Reservations could still be made on their website as of Friday evening.
