I can never have hot sauce ever again. Over the past year I've been dealing with a weird pain in my chest which I thought was just really bad indigestion. Turns out it was my pancreas. Just spent 6 days admitted to the hospital after experiencing the worst "flare up" I had experienced up until that time. Chronic pancreatitis. Turns out drinking beer and eating spicy food every day for nearly six years wasn't such a smart idea, and I've done permanent damage.. I've been a fan of hot sauce since I was around eight years old, starting with Tabasco. I'm now about to turn 38 and my body has finally said no more. I present to you my final lineup that I imagine I'll probably just keeped tucked in a drawer for sentimental reasons. I'm sad to be giving up the sauce but am excited to turn the page and live a much more health conscious life. It's been real.

Glad you at least got a diagnosis.

I’ll pour one out for you (into my mouth).

  2. WarningOdd7515

I read and reddit somewhere the anus and lips are similar skin types. You can always boof the sauce.

Hey man, at least it was caught before it became fatal. Nothing wrong with prioritizing your health over the sauce. ✌️

Melinda’s Ghost pepper is one of my favorites.

Edit: Didn’t originally read your text. Sorry to hear about the pancreatitis. That really sucks. Maybe with some time you can ease back into it.

Man. That’s rough. I’m glad you caught it on time. Somehow I developed a shellfish allergy in 1997. Haven’t eaten a prawn, clam, crab or even anything related or eaten in restaurants that serve such incase of cross contamination.

It sucks but it’s better than dying.

The body is capable of amazing feats of recovery and regeneration. Give it a rest for awhile, and you may be able to enjoy it again in moderation down the road.

What could hot sauce or spicy food possibly have to do with the pancreas? Spices don’t require enzymes to “digest”… they don’t require insulin to metabolize… I’m just puzzled at how your doctor seems to think spicy food has caused your pancreatitis… I’d get a second opinion if I were you.

  8. Spiriual-Bit-4387

Get a second opinion on this. That seems strange that hot sauce and spicy food would do damage to your pancreas. It’s probably the beer, give up the beer

  9. Naive_Elderberry_955

It’s the beer and what you’re eating the hot sauce with. Not the hot sauce itself. Carb heavy diets will exacerbate pancreatitis.

I have a friend that on average uses 12oz of Tabasco every week. If it’s Frank’s it 24oz per week

Good thing Doctor Reddit is here to second guess your health professional

  12. I wonder if hamburger helper knows it’s bad to place an ad on a food induced case of pancreatitis.

  13. DanYallSon

Congratulations! My wife would kill me if I bought that many bottles of hot sauce 😆

  14. I’ve had a great friend giving me all his hot sauces (some of them ones I’ve gifted him). The reason? Chronic pancreatitis. It sucks. But gift them. Take them out of the house and out of sight, our of mind. Really sorry for you but things will get better.

Its not the hot sauce itself its all that vinegar and preservatives it has. As a Mexican ive been eating homemade salsa made with real single ingredients. If youre willing you should start with basics like jalapeño, tomato and onion salsa. Then from there you can tweak em and avoid the vinegar.

I had to do the same about 3 years ago due to achalasia. I still miss the heat every meal. Still have a few sauces and a lot of powdered reapers just in case 🫤

  20. Emergency-Pack-5497

I have no official diagnosis yet, but I know my body does not appreciate the abuse either. I imagine I’ll be right there with you eventually.

  21. PhysicalCake3966

Blaming your problems on spicy food when it’s clear you’re drinking problem was the cause of your pancreatitis. Maybe stop drinking first then ease your way back into hot sauce if you choose.

  22. MoreCowbellllll

Take care of yourself, my man. Us and spicy food will be here. On day 35 of no alcohol here as well.

  23. GearheadTheVicious

The hot sauce wasn’t doing it, the beer was. You can still enjoy your hot sauce.

My wife died 3 months ago at the age of 40 from liver failure. Guess which thing between Smokin’ Marie’s Hot Sauce and hard cider she was told to give up…

  26. Pale-Bad-2482

I’m sorry to hear about this but congrats on making positive choices in your life.

I hope you can find a good home for that el Yucateca.

  27. Dang. I feel like we should have a memorial service and have a veteran come out and play Taps. Sorry, bro. 😢

  28. -burgers

Bro there’s a chance in the future. I also suffered from chronic pancreatitis for years and I can do spicy in moderation now!

  29. sundialNshade

Noooo omg please let me never happen to me I would maybe just die

  30. WowIsThisMyPage

I’m on the verge of this, luckily not anything with my pancreas (I really fucking hope), but I’ve developed GERD and finally can’t take the pain anymore. I’m having to give up spicy foods, coffee, and alcohol. I know I’m healthier for it, but damn it’s a bummer
