I made a mistake. I went down a Reddit thread and found out that a lot of people can’t stand me, but they really love my book and my recipes. The chief complaint appears to be that I’m a bit of a negative Nelly, overly serious, and too often play the victim. Look, I’m not above constructive criticism. So, today I’m going to tell you a fully full-on positive feel-good story in which no one is victimized while I make this biscotti from my new book, The Korean Vegan Homemade. So, when my first book was announced, I went to the local indie bookstore right by my house, and the plan was to ask whether the bookstore was going to carry my book. But, I totally chickened out and did the whole I’m pretending to look at books, but I’m actually just trying to work up the nerve to ask this really nice looking man at the cash register about my book. When my husband was just like, just ask him already. So, I went up to the clerk and was all like, “Uh, hi. I was just like, you know, wondering whether you might be um carrying this book called The Korean Vegan, like maybe.” And he clacks away at his keyboard and he goes, “Hm, yep. It looks like we’ll have three copies later this fall. want me to order one for you? To which I stammered, “Oh, no, that’s good. I’m I’m okay.” And then hubby butts in, “Yeah, she’s the author.” The clerk was super nice and was like, “Oh, congrats.” And I walked out feeling like a celebrity. When my book did come out, I went back to that bookstore and I asked the clerk, “Hey, would you like me to sign all your copies?” At the time, they only had a handful, but I did, and they sold out. They asked me to come back a week later, and I signed all their copies again, and they sold out. And I did that, walking back to that store week after week after week for months. And guess what? at the end of the year when this beautiful local independent bookstore that took a chance on a firsttime debut cookbook author who wanted to share Korean vegan food with the world when they tallied up all their sales. Mine was their most sold book of the entire year. Now, unfortunately, I no longer live in Chicago next to On a Bridge bookstore, but I am partnering up with Now Serving LA to do the same thing. Only this time, I’m not only signing them, I’m going to personalize all of them if you order them now. I love this story so much because this is the magic that can happen only with an independent bookstore. Hello. Hey.

People who complain about your stories are most probably very privileged people. They don’t know the struggle and hardship of your origins. Being a foreigner. Being an OutKast. I never thought about any of your stories as negative. I always felt the rage and hurt. And always felt the pride you have, overcoming these hardships.

I like your stories. Life isn't linear and for many, life isn't positive. Or at least, there might be periods with varying levels of difficulty throughout a person's life.That's what makes life beautiful. Not every moment ends with a satisfying, happy resolution. It makes the hard work we have to do to heal that much more fulfilling. Sometimes the resolution comes from years of deep reflection, which is what your stories give me the impression of. It feels like you have a quiet, sturdy confidence in yourself now. I wonder if you, or I, would be the same without the struggles that brought us here. Keep on keepin' on ❤
I wonder if people only consider you a negative nelly because they themselves want something to complain and be negative about but they don't have anything that can justify it. It's easy to silence issues by telling people they're being too negative or serious.
I think they just don’t like being reminded of how the world treats women of colour.

I personally have never commented anywhere. Ever. But I felt the need to express how important people like you are in today's world. You don't stage your life to be seen as perfect and easy as many Influencers do these days. I tend to feel so guilty seeing my own non-Influencer life when comparing. Other than that, the world just isn't as easy and uncomplicated as these people make it seem and raising awareness on such incredibly important topics as you do is the only hope we still have left for a good future. Quite frankly, people who are commenting your videos are too negative are the people who need to be reached out and put back into reality the most as they seem to be the ones forgetting what our world is currently looking like and are probably too sugar coated by mentioned Influencers. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with light hearted videos, but I feel like people being triggered by actual reality is a huge problem nowadays. Your stories are of conquerors; people in circumstances demanding courage and decisiveness.
People don’t like it when you point a flaw in the status quo that has treated them well and has become a source of their identity. It’s hard for certain people to hear the criticism of their society because they take it as a criticism of their own selves.. which isn’t entirely wrong either. It makes them feel good to think that society is fair enough and they are just better than others to not have other people’s problems. Telling them society is unfair in any sense threatens the idea that they deserve their good fortune. And asks them to consider the lives of others who are different.
Point is- you’re not too negative or anything like that! I hope you don’t buy into their ideas! 😅 You’re just speaking the truth and some people don’t like the truth.

I don’t think your stories are negative whatsoever. They are real so of course the talk about hurt, trauma, family history etc. in a heartfelt way. But your stories always end with hope, positive change or a really important life lesson🫶 And whenever you talk about the current state of the world I really respect and enjoy it because you can word things in such a beautiful, honest abd intelligent way. Came for a few recipes but stayed for the stories. The expositions of things so many people feel in such a personal way isn't something that's often touched on so well. So I stayed for recipes AND commentary.
