An Italian café in York has lodged a bid to serve alcohol after its opening in the summer.

Caffe Massarella, in Feasegate, has applied to serve alcohol from 8.30am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Its licensing application lodged with City of York Council stated it was applying to serve alcohol alongside its existing hot and cold food and deserts offering.

The application added there were also plans for an outdoor seating area for its customers.

It follows the opening of the café and restaurant in August.

Caffe Massarella offers Italian food and coffee which its website states are made from carefully-sourced fresh ingredients, often from artisan producers.

It has locations in Derbyshire, Enfield, Harrogate, Lancashire, Meadowhall and York.

The business was started by the Massarella family from central Italy who emigrated to Britain more than 150 years ago.

The York café opened in a building which previously housed a museum of old arcade machines and a bookshop and women’s clothing store before that.

Caffé Massarella’s menu serves a range of food including a bacon brioche, sandwiches, paninins and salads.

Green chilli eggs, smoked samon rolls, red berry pancakes and soups are also on offer
