CHAMBERSBURG- The Sunrise Diner sits just beyond the offramp of Interstate 81 on Lincoln Way East. It is an ideal spot for travelers to stop in and enjoy a meal made with fresh ingredients and a wonderful staff who doesn’t just take your order, they take the time to get to know you. That is what is most important to owner Saddik Azmy.
“We have worked hard to build a good relationship with our friends in Chambersburg,” he explained to me with great pride. That is how he referred to the diner’s visitors; as friends, not just customers.
And Saddik builds these types of relationships with not only the people of Chambersburg, but all around the tri-state area. He also owns Shula’s Grill and Crab House in Hagerstown, the Fairground Grill and Seafood in Carlisle, and the KMJ Diner in Shippensburg.
The Sunrise Diner has a huge dining room area with seating in both large and small booths as well as table seating to accommodate any size group. Keep them in mind for your next party. On Friday-Sunday, the Sunrise offers a breakfast buffet from 7:00am-12:00pm, with many options from traditional meat and eggs, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and fresh fruit. The breakfast buffet deal will fill you up for only $11.95.

There are everyday specials at the Sunrise for lunch and dinner, plus other diner favorites like hamburgers, paninis, and specialty sandwiches, their gyros came highly recommended. More options include roasted entrees with turkey and beef, and a variety of choice cuts for steak. For a more international flair, there are Italian dishes such as spaghetti and parmigiana, and stir-fries if you are craving Asian cuisine. Don’t forget the seafood, the menu features a selection of fried or broiled fish, shrimp, scallops, and crab cakes. All at prices that won’t leave you crying in your soup.
Speaking of soup, I started off my meal with a selection from their soup of the day, ham and bean. It was a delight mix of white beans and ham slow cooked and served with crackers. With the helpful suggestion of my wonderful waitress, Danielle, I decided to try one of the day’s specials, Hamburger and Macaroni. The special came with a choice of side, which I chose applesauce, and a house salad. I am glad I listened to Danielle, the hamburger and macaroni was amazing. Very simple ingredients, ground beef, elbow macaroni, but the magic was in the marinara sauce.

For dessert, I got a double treat. My dinner special came with a scoop of ice cream, I chose chocolate, and then I just had to order the homemade cheesecake topped with a generous helping of blueberries. It was just what I needed to cure the Monday blues and get me ready for the rest of the week.
With the holiday season right around the corner be sure to keep the Sunrise Diner in mind if you are looking for some alternative meal options. They will be serving traditional Thanksgiving dishes on Thurs. Nov. 27 for their holiday special and will be doing the same on Thurs. Dec. 25 for Christmas. So, if cooking isn’t on your holiday wish list, stop in at the Sunrise.
