Barley Swine as #1 is the biggest laughable offense. Place is trash. Most of the list is solid. I would never put Suerte or Birdies toward the top though. Canje should be higher on this list.

  3. The idea of flying to and from Tokyo every week sounds beyond exhausting, let alone working a shift at a restaurant and shopping for fish between the flights.

I have flown to Asia a bunch of times and I feel like garbage after those 10 hour + flights even after a day or two.

I didnt see Intero. Did I miss it on the list? Its so good

When I finished reading this I briefly wondered what year it was published.

kind of interesting to see este / suerte , odd duck / barley swine locking up so much of the top 10. I feel like normally you would pick one of the two and just consider them linked on a list like this.

I love all four and would probably take BS and suerte over the other two on a list like this so not hating, but good to make room for others I think.

going to join in on the chorus of birdies wtf. I do not get it.

Also, odam has always inexplicably loved loc d’oro which is pretty good, but never great. I would take intero over it easily, and even (gasp) red ash.

Wish I could go to tsuke, never been able to get a res and live to far away to do short notice.

    Is le calamar worthy?

  8. Barley Swine is an imitation of what a Michelin dining experience looks like.

Imagine flying into Austin for a dinner at Barley Swine, specifically – people travel across the country for Michelin restaurants all the time.

You would be flummoxed, and probably upset, because there is literally nothing about what Barley Swine offers, except for maybe the service and atmosphere, that is worth the amount of acknowledgement it receives. It is a high tier restaurant for a city that doesn’t pride itself on haute cuisine or fine dining.

It is also a crazy overrated and overpriced restaurant – Suerte and Birdie’s are even worse in that respect.

This list is weak as hell and reeks of industry relationships.

Patrizis, Intero, Micklethwait, Cuantos Tacos, etc, aren’t even on the list.

    Downvote me.

People always get way too mad about every excellent Austin restaurant not making a list. They’re all doing fine. It’s just a list folks. It’s not that deep.

  10. Flatduo88

I do pretty much like everything on the list but damn Austin is too big of a city to not get constant new blood into these lists. Overpriced “concepts” and boring (and underwhelming) fusion spots I wish could get replaced by some well executed, simple food that doesn’t have to be in a food truck.

Shout out Olamaie. Expensive af but incredible. I was given a $400 giftcard there by a friend who got it from her dad but she’s celiac with a dairy allergy (like read the menu, dad, come on). Easily spent that $400 in one night for two of us. Didn’t even buy drinks. Granted, we did go baked as a potato. Worth it? Yeah cuz I didn’t pay a dime of my own money. How in the fuck people are affording to go there regularly? Idk what y’all do for a living.

Nobody @ me I’m not trying to die on this hill but it makes me sad Foreign and Domestic doesn’t make it on these lists or really even get mentioned alongside these kinds of places. I’ve always found it occupies a really special niche in our restaurant market…rustic but high quality plates, some of the best counter seating in town, not pretentious or blown up on IG… its so much less stress than trying to eat at some of the places on this list lol

  13. Can someone rank these is by value?

I eat out “nice” now and then, but at this point, every time I go to a “nice” place I think “that was good, but it wasn’t $200 good”.

Who the fuck is still reading the Statesman or even cares what they think? Where do they think they’re getting their credibility from here?

  15. ShireSmokersBBQ

Criminal that Interstellar isn’t on that list

  16. ItsmeSean

I’ve eaten at all these. Hestia and Luties are my #1 and #2 in Austin.
