Another longtime Vancouver restaurant is sadly saying goodbye.

The Poor Italian, a neighbourhood fixture at First and Rupert for more than 16 years, has announced that it will close permanently later this year.

The team shared the news on Instagram and their website earlier this month, marking the end of an era for the Hastings Sunrise community.

Their farewell message was simple but emotional.

They thanked guests for 16 wonderful years of support and invited diners to join Head Chef Stefania Marinova, Sous Chef Allen Ching and the rest of their team for one last meal before their final evening of service on Sunday, December 21, 2025.

The Poor Italian has long been known as an independent East Side spot serving rustic and seasonal Italian meals.

The restaurant sits at the busy corner of First Avenue and Rupert Street, a high traffic location that introduced countless Vancouverites to homestyle pasta dishes, hearty mains and warm, family style hospitality.

While no reason was officially shared, closures like this often come down to the same two challenges in Vancouver.

Redevelopment pressures or retirement are common endings for longtime independent restaurants, and either could be likely in this case.

The Poor Italian now joins a growing list of recently closed food spots in Vancouver, including Floata, Cafe and Life Co Cambie, and Jitters Caffe.
