LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Arnis and Mallory Robbins started their barbecue journey a decade ago with a food trailer and a smoker. Their restaurant, Evie Mae’s BBQ, has since grown into a Wolfforth staple.
“For as difficult as starting a business from scratch is, I feel like Wolfforth has made it as easy as possible. It’s just always felt like a natural fit.”
“I think they’re just happy to have us here,” Mallory said. “We’ve always felt at home and we live right down the road and our kids go to school here. It’s wonderful.”
The Robbins say what makes good, quality barbecue is not just the quality of product, but the pride that goes into cooking it.
“We strive every day to cook the best food that we can and we’re light on our feet,” Arnis said. “We’ve got an awesome crew that’s just ready and able to take on anything we throw at them, all the time.”
It was all hands on deck last week when ESPN reached out for Evie Mae’s to be featured as a guest chef. There was just one thing standing in their way.
“We literally found out 48 hours before GameDay.”
The Evie Mae’s crew got to work on preparing everything needed for a national tv appearance.
“It was amazing,” Arnis said. “I told a lot of people on Saturday that I would’ve told you the majority of our ‘special days’ at 10 years in were probably behind us. Saturday was right up there with the most special day of our business and our existence.”
Arnis and Mallory say the ESPN crew were fantastic to interact with, and one thing that sticks out to them is the love everyone had for West Texas after they visited.
“Being here is so special and there’s nowhere like this anywhere,” Mallory said. “I think it was cool that they got to come here and see that.”
“A smaller city in West Texas can have such a huge impact on such a broad stage in a 72-hour period,” Arnis said. “That’s all they’ve talked about on all of their shows since they were here.”
Evie Mae’s BBQ will continue to serve West Texas and they’re looking forward to the next ten years and beyond.
