I never saw this in Thailand, I did accidentally eat an uncooked shrimp in some type of food in Cambodia and got offered it many times in Vietnam.

I live in Thailand and this is very real and quite common. The market near me has it. You can order it like this or make an omelette with buck load of these small shrimp. Great source for parasites. I’m immune compromise so I couldn’t eat them anymore.

As far as I know, it is a thing and you shake them vigorously before chowing down. No they don’t all die when you shake them. Most survive. It scares me.

This is real. This is a common dish in Laos and Thailand and is actually very delicious. It’s akin to Ceviche, but, if you’re familiar with Aguachile, it’s much closer to that, except it wiggles a little. The texture is also really good in this condition. If you wait for the lime to cook the grass shrimp, it’s too chewy/crunchy (because of the raw herbs and roots mixed in). The other option is to use frozen grass shrimp that you thaw. Still good, but less flavorful.

It’s called ‘goong ten’, dancing shrimp. You shake the box to cover the shrimp with the sauce and stun them, then eat it with sticky rice. It’s… an acquired taste.

I used to have pet shrimp so this is disturbing to me. (And I know factory farm animals have it a lot worse. I don’t eat meat. Two things can be bad at the same time.)
I’m also surprised at her grabbing the shrimp from the tank and dumping it straight in. Because when I had shrimp pets, their water had water conditioner and they pooped a lot…
