unboxed an unused slow cooker that has been sitting hidden away in a storage space for years. I found it after doing a deep clean of the house. It was still in its packaging when i pulled it out of the box. Nothing seems to have been living in it. Can I still safely use it with no health risks or just throw it away?

If it helps, this is the Rival Slow Cooker Bought from Walmart.

I wouldn’t figure it would be a problem but I would also not want to use it myself. You said it was from Walmart so scrounge up 25 bucks and go get another one.

That can absolutely be cleaned up. Id use a combination of baking soda and vinegar, make a paste and scrub it with steel wool.

IMO it shouldnt be a problem. The rust isnt touching the food and is just visually unappealing.

The same thing happened to my very old pot. I wound up taking it to the eco center. Just…. you can never be too careful. It’s a personal choice. I have a sensitive stomach so I didn’t feel like chancing it.

Toss it and get a new one. Slow cookers are inexpensive, especially at this time of year.

Carefully monitor it the first time you use it. if it’s rusty on this surface, it maybe be rusty internally as well, and that can be a fire hazard. If you feel up to it, pop the bottom off of it (usually just a couple of screws) and see if it looks alright inside.

Keep the crock part and search for a base at thrift stores.
