Iconic N.J. ice cream shop to open 2nd location next week after 86 years in business

A ice cream institution for the past 86 years in New Jersey will finally open its second location next week in a much-anticipated expansion.

Nasto’s Ice Cream Co.’s will hold a grand opening Saturday, Nov. 22 at the new store in the Cloverleaf Shopping Center at 992 St. Georges Ave. in the Avenel section of Woodbridge.

The big event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, giveaways, live music and free samples.

The new shop will be open from noon to 10 p.m. on opening day and Sunday, Nov. 23. Once open, the store will operate seven days, with hours to be announced.

Nasto’s Old World Desserts has been service it’s sweet treats and ice cream at its Newark shop since 1939.

Founded by Frank Sr. and Angelina Nasto, the company started as a neighborhood shop in Newark’s Ironbound Section and has grown into a manufacturer of premium ice cream and frozen desserts.

The Woodbridge location will serve the company’s signature Italian specialties, including Spumoni, Bisque Tortoni and the original Tartufo.

Other offerings include ice cream, gelato, sorbet, Italian ices, ice cream cakes, gourmet cakes, pastries and individual desserts.

Gabriella Nasto told NJ Advance Media that she and her sister, Victoria, fourth generation family members in the business, are “excited to be part of the Woodbridge community.”

The recipes trace back to Frank Nasto Sr.’s hometown of Nocera, Italy.

The Newark store at 236-240 Jefferson St. features a machine in the front window where customers can watch ice cream being made.

The business expanded under the guidance of Frank Sr.’s eldest sons, Al and Frank Jr., supported by a family foundation of nine children who contributed to its growth.
