Trying a post since I lack the community karma to comment on the chive thread. Mods – If you don't allow this to post that's fine, but do us all a favor and stick the info in the chive thread. I genuinely think the advice about seeking a good rhythm will help F1exican.
Those chives still aren't perfect – there are some blocks, but just as importantly there is also pretty good variation in the size of the small cuts. As long as the cuts are not even there will always be some pieces that will look huge when compared to others. Now that there are videos up I did some quick analysis and wanted to share my findings.
TL;DR – the cutting rhythm used varies pretty noticeably.
I started this because you can hear the cutting rhythm change throughout the first video, so I'm putting some numbers to the first ~90 seconds of action for you. Every time u/F1exican starts cutting I start counting, and I stop when there's a pause to push the chives forward. I could get more detailed and talk about the delays within a section, but the section sizes and speed variations are likely sufficient at this point.
What the Numbers Tell Us
u/F1exican is visually processing distance and making cuts; he hasn't built up automatic muscle memory yet. If your muscles aren't twitching the same way consistently it's going to mean differences in knife lift, draw, and/or push – and differences in chive size. I would recommend taking a day or two to focus on the cutting rhythm rather than on size; it may feel like a step backwards in terms of sizing, but it will pay off in the long run. Maybe even get a metronome to sync your cuts to while you're building up to it.

How many more days do you estimate until f1exican has enough muscle memory to enter into a chive chopping flow state?
How long before we get odds for the perfect chives on fanduel?
Can we get it as a line chart?
Analytics kills another beloved sport.
Much like CPR, I would advise u/F1exican to find a song chorus that fits the most natural chive rhythm and use that to develop a flow. It would also help to bring consistency to each block of chops. I would make recommendations but I’m not sure what BPM we’re looking for.
I joined with a bachelor’s in green onions, I left with a doctorate in chivology.
Dude. This is very cool. Well done!!!
Things like this are why I love the internet
This is scary but really kind of cool 💚🔪
I know what this means , and I don’t need it … but I really need it in an iv bag … it feels good for my soul .
This is really calling to my inner maths nerd. I love this 💚. Thank you for your effort! 💚
Sir, this is a Wendy’s
Please create a formula that yields a number we can use to rate chive cutting performance throughout the industry.
YES WE flex1CAN
Can’t believe we’re getting a chive breakdown
A fuckin metronome? This is too far into the absurd. The other advice is practical but you don’t need a timing mechanism to cut mise en place.
i d like to add.
…green/wood cutting board column,
temp check column,
and sanitation check box.
What we *really* need is some sort of sensor *on* (or in!) the knife so we can get some real performance data!
This post is why this sub is my favorite.
A sub based on a book written by a legend. Anthony was always all about the everyday chef perfecting their craft.
And u/F1exican is paying the ultimate homage. They are not only showing a dedication to sharing the struggle we chefs strive for perfection, knowing we will never find it. But still we try. Somedays, we fake it, because FUCK, life be fuckin’ lifin’. A sentiment Chef Bourdain portrayed in both his books.
I love this sub.
I have gotten infinitely more satisfaction from looking at chives than eating them.
The third bunch he grabbed started great

A chive related thread without any AEW/wrestling gifs?
Wait so this sub is only about chopping chieves?
I’m sorry, there’s chive cutting videos I’ve been missing?
Holy shit this is so in depth
Enlightening. Chivelord must assume steady state…
But seriously this is a really cool analysis! Love a good spreadsheeting things out

… You might influence me to buy a metronome just to chop vegetables
The things that will be learned about cutting and methodology from this video series will be amazing.
This is the highest effort chive post I’ve seen.
I love it, keep it coming! 👏
Thank you for doing this, I hope our Chivelord approves.
Also, my phone now knows the word Chivelord, it’s fully recognized. Well done!
This is what I’m talking about! Use data to drive chive performance!!
(Happy to create tableau dashboards as needed for chivisualization)
This is really cool
Also, are you acoustic?
I didn’t expect this much reaction, but I’m very happy to be able to post in the chive thread now! Thanks to all of my fellow data-centric redditors, and also to everyone who thought it was ridiculous but who let me have a good time with it.
There’s not a lot of reason to track this day-to-day (gains are likely very incremental) but I’ll do periodic spot checks if the videos keep coming and hopefully we’ll see improvements in consistency and accuracy.
Nice stats breakdown and tips – let’s see if he takes the advice:)
Interesting. Getting a little more into the weeds, I’m reading *Why We Sleep* and one study showed that sleep transferred motor memories to the part of the brain that operated without conscious thought and that most of it occurred in stage 2 NREM, specifically the last couple of hours. So based on that, it would be especially valuable to focus on the rhythm on a night that he could get enough sleep. This held true regardless of when subjects worked on the task.
The reference to muscle memory made me think of that. So based on your information, if he worked with a metronome and tried to focus on the rhythm , then got a good night’s sleep, his brain should move it over to automatic part of his brain and there should be an improvement on the speed the next day.
Try middle out.
Nerds
Wait, there’s video now?
