This shelf-stable smoked mackerel is available in the states through Amazon. As the brand name suggests, in Japan this is classic bar food, eaten along with beers. Many beers.

The smoke is restrained, quite nice really. The mackerel hasn’t been rendered into jerky—it’s still nicely tender. I don’t believe my palate is sophisticated enough to distinguish between garlic and aged garlic, but I did enjoy the garlic note that snuck in under the cover of smoke. The brand also offers two different salted varieties and a “spicy” version. Spicy was out of stock when I ordered, but I expect I’ll give that a try in the future.

The package contains one half of a modestly-sized fish, about 95 grams (3.5 ounces-ish). That was a perfect snack-size for me.

This is packaged for drinkers on-the-go, so they bundle in a toothpick and a moist toilette. Hilarious, really, but I used both, and I appreciated having them.

Oh wow… that looks divine. I wonder if the Asian grocery near me would be able to carry it so I could pick it up whenever instead of getting it on Amazon. It looks like the perfect thing to bring along when I meet up with my homegirls for drinks.
