While I hate buying "special" versions of ingredients; I didn't quite realize how effective popcorn salt was when it comes to sticking to the surface of the popcorn. I began playing with different variables for the Serious Eats popcorn column and every time I sprinkled popcorn flavored salt; that bowl would quickly disappear at my home compared to others.

Then I got Samin Nosrat's latest book and noticed that she grounds her salt along with other spices before adding it to the popcorn. And so does Alton Brown. Turns out the smaller the micron size of the salt; Van der Waals forces would kick in and gravity will have less of an effect. I am hooked now, is there any other popcorn flavoring that y'all love and recommend?

Just crush some kosher salt between your fingers and you’ll have popcorn salt.

Honestly the stuff is great. We had a popcorn maker on deployment and having a full bar of different flavors helped break up the monotony day to day

  3. I like the flavors, but it makes me cough when I eat it. Weird stuff my wife can eat it just fine

  4. Flavacol (popcorn salt plus artificial butter flavor) is a life changing purchase. You can get 10x the amount of one of these shakers for $5.

It’s apparently what every commercial place uses.

This is my go to table salt! I love how it adds saltiness without any grittiness or crunch. It’s also perfect for salads!

Before I bought the giant quart of flavacol like 8 years ago, I would just grind kosher salt in my spice grinder and add that to the pot when making popcorn.

Also the WhirleyPop is almost perfect at making popcorn.

I tend to like a bit of curry powder (the Japanese chain, Coco Ichibanya, sells a premade curry/spice mix that I find works pretty well on popcorn.)

I stand on the hill that King Arther better cheddar cheese powder is the superior popcorn topping and I will fight anyone who disagrees!

I enjoy the salt and vinegar flavor as well as dill pickle and white cheddar.

I have lately been on a kick with this “Umami Ramen” seasoning on my popcorn. Just bought my 3rd bottle of it. From McCormicks Simply Asia brand.

Ranch is top tier. To quote Frank’s Red Hot,
“I put that $?@¡ on everything.”

It’s very salty. You have to use minimal amounts and a lot of those flavors don’t come through unless you use a ton. It’s not worth it.

Reminds me of a cyanide and happiness comic, sort of.

Down here in Australia we have chicken salt which is a combo of salt, chicken bouillon and other assorted ingredients (depending on the blend). Similar concept to this.

We love the dill pickle! Toss them on your fries out the air fryer…..game changer!
