I have some applesauce my mom gave me a year or two ago. I'm thinking I should toss it but just in case it's normal I wanted to ask!

Pretty sure that’s mold

Pretty sure it’s mold. Also, it could just be the lighting but the apple sauce itself looks like it has a red color to it and that could be a sign of bacteria.

Does the dark stuff on the lid wipe off? If not, it could be a reused lid corroding. It’s odd that the mold would grow so large on the lid and not be visible on the applesauce at all.

Don’t eat that yo

Room for doubt? Throw it out.

And that’s why I always write the dates on the jars before storing them.

The dark flakes on the gasket look like chemical reaction products, not necessarily of concern.
The wet blobs in the middle of the lid look more biological. For that, I would throw it out.

More info needed. Was this a safe, tested recipe? How was it stored? Rings on or off? If you clean the lid, does it have small pits in it (pinholing)?
As always, when in doubt, throw it out.

It is on the jar as well as the lid, so give it a note of gratitude and send it off to the compost.

Mold

That dot pattern is fungal. Toss the sauce and lid, you might be able to save the glass jar if you scrub with bleach or vinegar and boil it.

It’s tricky with other people’s canned things. It’s hard to know what recipe they used or if it was a tested recipe or an “old timer” one. I don’t eat what others have canned.
