I'd seen recent recs for Fu Zhou Wei Zhong Wei (Jia Xiang Feng Wei) so made a trip out this week to try them out myself! Got an order of the pan fried dumplings (guo tie, 锅贴) and the much loved small steamed buns (xiao long bao, 小笼包) to go.
The dumplings were very solid – probably the crispiest and thickest dumpling wrapper I've tried so far and very satisfying to bite into. The pork and chive filling was also very tasty, though I personally thought it could use a little more salt/seasoning, but that was easy to fix with the dumpling sauce on the tables. I think I still like the dumplings at Shu Jiao Fu Zhou a little more, but these are a great option if lines are super long there.
I'd been a little confused with the buns as they're the same name as the usual soup dumplings, but resemble bao zi a little more in terms of the thickness of the dough and the size. I took an order of these to go and heated up at home for dinner hours later, and they were still delicious! Loved that the dough wasn't too thick and the inner filling was super savory and meaty. They were a little messy to eat but so delicious and filling!
Just wanted to thank the group for yet another great rec! They're a small stall at the basement of the East Broadway Mall so they don't get a lot of foot traffic, but are a great place for a quick eat or for takeout. Each item was just $5.50 so definitely great value for what you pay.
