Hello everyone! It’s Svetlana with you. What are you doing? Can you imagine when you hear Bulgaria? Golden sands? Cheap vacation? Forget it. Bulgaria is much more more than you think. In this video I will reveal all the hidden facets of Bulgaria. So, are you ready? Then let’s go! What do you really know about Bulgaria? That this is a country that has never changed its name since 681? That this is the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet, which almost half the world speaks and writes? That here in Varna gold is stored, which older, much older than the Egyptian pyramids? That a person is of Bulgarian origin John Atanasov is essentially at the origins creation of the world’s first electronic computer? Yes, this is all true, but for most Bulgaria is something simple. It’s sun-drenched beaches, that’s all included in Golden Sands, this is the first a trip abroad for many. This is a glossy postcard, which you have already seen a thousand times. But what is Bulgaria like if you don’t look at it on postcards, but with my eyes those who live here? What is she like if get off the tourist trail? This is a place where history doesn’t just whisper from behind the museum glass. She screams from every peak, from every stone on the pavement. This is a country where from the inaccessible mountains peaks to the warm sea You can get there in one day. They say that when God created heaven, He definitely took lessons in Bulgaria. Maybe. But today we will not talk about heaven, we Let’s talk about real life. Bulgaria is real archaeological phenomenon. In case you didn’t know, she’s ranked third. place in Europe by number of historical monuments. Third – right after the titans: Italy and Greece. How is this possible on such a compact territory? Just take a look at the map. The point is this. To the east is the Black Sea. This is our facade, our showcase. Our 378 kilometers of coastline. In the north is the great Danube. This is not just a river, it is a wide and powerful one. waterway and border with Romania. Across the country from west to east, like ridge of the giant beast, Stara Planina is coming. Those same Balkans, which gave the name to the entire peninsula. South of the Rhodope and Pirin mountains. By the way, mountains occupy more than 40% territory of Bulgaria. But that’s a completely different story. Mystical. Ancient. To the west are Serbia and northern Macedonia. To the south are our closest neighbors mentality and climate. Greece and, of course, Türkiye. And what do all these numbers and names mean for you, for an ordinary person? First of all, they mean human scale. Breakfast by the sea and dinner in the mountains. This is not a metaphor for tourists. For us in Bulgaria it’s just an ordinary Saturday. The roads here are short. The logistics are clear. You can travel across the country from the east west of Burgas to Sofia in 5-6 hours. This scale is the first thing for which People fall in love with Bulgaria. There is no need here choose between the sea and the mountains. Here they take everything at once. And secondly, this is means climate tuning. The country is located at the junction of the continental and Mediterranean zones. In simple terms, you can adjust the climate to suit yourself. Do you want warmer winters? Often there is no snow at all, but with humid sea air? Seaside ones will suit you cities such as Varna or Burgas. Don’t like humidity and want crisp 4’s season with real snow in winter? Then your choice is mountain or flat part, like Sofia or Plovdiv. Why do people love her? History does not live here only under glass in museums. She’s literally lying on the street. And this is not an exaggeration. Starting point. 681 year. The First Bulgarian Kingdom. It was powerful a state that competed with Byzantium itself. Then Byzantium, the second kingdom, and then a very long and complicated one five-century Ottoman period, which is called here in one succinct word – yoke. 500 years, then the turbulent 19th century, Russo-Turkish War and long-awaited liberation. The sharp, very difficult 20th century with two world wars – socialism. And here it is, the current parliamentary republic within the EU and NATO. And all these layers are right here under your feet. You are just walking around the center of Varna, the main pedestrian street and right under your feet under the slabs the remains of the Roman city of Odessos. In Sofia, they are opening under the tram tracks all new-new Roman layers of ancient Serdica. Emperor Constantine himself The Great One adored this city. They say it was he who uttered the phrase “Serdica is my Rome.” He seriously considered Sofia as a future the capital of the entire Roman Empire. But in the end he chose the city of Byzantium, which was subsequently renamed Constantinople. In Plovdiv, which is older Rome and Athens, you drink coffee. Sitting in an ancient amphitheater the time of Emperor Trojan, which is adjacent to the workshops modern artisans. On the shore is Nessebar, a peninsula town, where every stone on the pavement speaks voices of different centuries. This country is a living history textbook. And yes, Cyrillic is at home here. Early written tradition “our alphabet” were formed precisely on these lands during the times of Tsar Simeon. Bulgarian is, by the way, the only one The language of the European Union is written in Cyrillic. So familiar letters guide you confidently, and it seems that everything is clear, although you will say, “Oh, “letters, like ours!”, not quite. We have letters like they have. The first one The Cyrillic alphabet was created here. Great missionaries- enlighteners, brothers Cyril and Methodius. And the Bulgarian language, although similar, hides in funny traps for yourself. Remember, if you are sent to Bulgaria to the right, they mean “straight ahead”, and “to the right” will be “clear”. Here are some funny words for raising the mood, which always amuse tourists. Mayka is mom. The table is a chair. The mountain is a forest. The week is Sunday, and kaka is respectful address to to the older sister. Yes, that’s it. But the main trap that people fall into is all without exception – These are gestures. Remember, In Bulgaria, nodding your head up and down means “no” and a slight rocking motion from side to side is “yes”. It’s the other way around. Or rather, it was like that. historically. Now because of globalization and tourism in Bulgaria they wave this way and that, which creates even more a lot of confusion. I’ll be honest, I’ll get used to it. almost impossible. And don’t let the seeming it’s easy to deceive you. In practice Bulgarian is one of the most complex Slavic languages. In it, for example, not 3, but as many as 9 times verbs. Many Russian speakers, Having lived here for years, they still can’t master it it at a high level. But Bulgaria today is a country that is changing before our eyes. And two main words on 2025-2026 is Schengen and Euro. Let’s be honest. With the entry into full Schengen, and now it’s both airy and maritime and land control, Travel has become easier. This is not just a stamp in your passport. For those who live here with a residence permit, this is freedom of movement, o which we have long dreamed of. Second – Euro. Transition to the Euro will take place on January 1, 2026. And here is the main insight that 99% miss. observers, because of which they fear will lead to rising prices. Remember, the Bulgarian lev is more than 20 years old tightly pegged to the Euro at a fixed rate. The exchange rate of 1 euro is 1 lev. 95 stotinki and 583 thousandths. It hasn’t changed for decades, so no sharp swings, as it was in other countries, There is no waiting for the transition here. The transition will be rather technical. They’ll just change the price tags. For a traveler this means absolute predictability, but for a real estate investor, however, This is a topic for a separate long video. So, Bulgaria is convenient, it is It is historical and it is modern. But let’s be honest, many people came here for one reason – the sea. This is the first and the most the country’s great argument. And, by the way, also unique. Did you know that the Black Sea is one of the freshest in the world. Its salinity is about 18 ppm, almost twice lower than the Mediterranean – 38. The entire coastline is This is about 378 kilometers. Of these, according to various estimates, approximately 130 kilometers is the cleanest sandy beaches. The most famous are two giants. The first one is Sunny Beach. More Bulgarian – “Sunny Beach”. It is an 8-kilometer beach up to 100 wide meters, located in large safe bay. The gradual entry into the sea is ideal for children. Infrastructure – hotels for every budget, restaurants, water parks. And yes, there is a Blue Flag here. The second is Golden Sands. “Golden Sands”. It is located near Varna on the territory national park. It is greener, more shady. The beach is 3 kilometers long, but also wide. But if you think that the whole coast Bulgaria has only these two giants, You are deeply mistaken. The coastline here is completely different. It is divided into northern and southern. There is a sea north of Varna is friends with rocks and wind. This is wild, untamed beauty. This is Cape Kaliakra. These are the Tyulenevo arches. These are the white terraces of Balchik and its incredible botanical garden, which smells like thousands of roses and sea salt at the same time. And to the south of Burgas the coast is completely different. These are long golden sandy arcs. These are dense forests of natural Rapotamo and Stranji nature reserves. These are old cobbled streets Sozopol, the wide beaches of Primorsk, intimate and cozy bays of Lozenets. And the place of power in the very south is Sinemorets. This is the place where the Veleka River draws incredible sandy arrow, flowing into the Black Sea. This is a unique experience. You can swim in cold fresh river and after 20 meters dive into the warm salty sea. But if you think that Bulgaria is only the sea… you You’re missing exactly 50% of the country. And perhaps its better half – the mountains. This is the second argument, and it is, perhaps no weaker than the sea. There are three main mountain ranges in Bulgaria. Three characters. The first one is Rila. These are the highest mountains in the Balkans. This is where it is located Musala peak – 2925 meters. The highest point of all Balkan Peninsula. These are the famous seven Rila lakes. It’s glacial cold and crystal clear air. And it is here, in the valley of the Rila River, at an altitude of 1150 meters, Hidden Rila Monastery. The most significant spiritual center of Bulgaria. The upper points can be reached by marked paths, without mountaineering heroism. The reboot happens automatically. The second character is Pirin. This is something else. These are sharp, almost Gothic ridges. These are stone bowls of lakes. These are panoramas that simply cannot be are placed into the lens. The third is in the Rhodope Mountains. In the Great Massif grows miracle herb – Mursal tea. They drink it here for immunity. It is said to contain 22 trace elements. In winter, it is Pirin that switches on a different rhythm. This is the country’s main ski resort. And his calling card is worldwide the famous resort of Bansko. But the main thing is the Bulgarian mountains. It’s incredibly nice here Wildlife has been preserved. Biodiversity of Bulgaria – one of the richest in Europe. It is protected in three national parks. in 11 natural parks and in dozens of nature reserves. 93 of 233 species It is here that European mammals live. But the main secret of the Bulgarian mountains is their incredible accessibility. Eco-trails are thought out to little things for families with children. The “ring” route system is This is simply brilliant. You always know the path will lead you right to the starting point. Living in Sofia, you get into a car. and in just half an hour You are already on Mount Vitosha. The mountains here are the main thing Bulgaria’s advantage. There is no need to plan here vacation to see nature. You can escape from city traffic on Vitosha, to breathe in pure air and see snow. And in just an hour, return to work. The mountains here are part of everyday life. And if we talk about records, then this is where the highest one is located waterfall in the Balkans – Райското Пръскало, что перевести which translates as “Paradise Splashes”. 124.5 meters of continuous water fall. And finally, what lies underground. And this is perhaps the main hidden trump card Bulgaria, about which You asked to tell. Did you know that Bulgaria is second in Europe? after Iceland in reserves mineral and thermal waters. There are more than 600 sources here. This is the country’s most underrated treasure. This is her liquid gold. Hundreds of springs gushing from the depths of the earth. Today Bulgaria is a real paradise for SPA and wellness tourism. But it’s not that simple Spa tourism, just like in glossy magazines. This is a whole culture of health improvement that is disappearing roots go back to the Romans, who knew a lot about baths. The main thing to understand is – it’s not just “warming up”. Each water has its own character and its own medical specialization. For example, there is the city of Hisarya. It is essentially an ancient Roman spa resort, still surrounded perfectly preserved fortress wall. Its waters are specialized in the treatment of kidneys and urology. There is Sandanski on south on the border with Greece. He has a unique dry climate and clean air. It is recognized as one of the best in Europe for treatment of asthma and respiratory diseases. The air there is a medicine in itself. And there is Velingrad – officially recognized spa capital of the Balkans. There are dozens of hotels, from five-star to family, and almost everyone has their own thermal pool. People come here to treat joints, nervous system or just reboot into hot water in the middle of a pine forest. This is the very thing that is accessible the nature I was talking about. You can go skiing in Bansko, and On the way back, stop by the village of Banya. It’s only five kilometers away. To soak in an open thermal in a pool with a temperature of plus 38 degrees, while there is snow all around. This is priceless. Bulgarian spa resorts are an opportunity not just relax, but completely reboot your body at prices, which will pleasantly surprise any European. The seas and mountains are what Why do people come to Bulgaria? But the cities are why in Bulgaria stay or leave. Bulgarian cities do not play a role in the ranking. Therefore, it is one thing to come as a tourist for three day, and it’s quite another thing to choose a city for life, for work, for children. Each city has its own pronounced character. But before we dive into the cities, let’s talk about the main thing – about people and safety. Bulgaria is a country with a very loyal attitude towards foreigners, in including Russian speakers. People here are externally and mentally similar to us. It will not be difficult for you to find a common language, moreover, that the older one the generation that studied Russian at school, often switches to Russian language to help you. And it’s safe here. Despite all the global turbulence, Bulgaria remains a very calm country. And these are not just mine feelings, these are dry statistics. According to the 2025 Crime Index Bulgaria has lower figures, and the safety index, respectively, higher than countries such as Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, USA and France. There is no such thing on the streets aggression, no gopniks. Sofia. It’s the capital. It’s the brain of Bulgaria. This is business and cultural center. This is a city, where modern business centers are quietly get along with the quiet ones green courtyards of old houses. They say there is a beautiful center here in the style Renaissance. It’s true. But It’s a drop in the ocean. Her real the dominant feature is Mount Vitosha. Mount Mayak, which sets the line horizon and mood. Imagine you’re stuck in a traffic jam, and right there there is a huge one in front of you snow-capped peak. Yes, There is a metro and trams here. There is that same Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built from 1882 to 1912 on public donations as a symbol of liberation. There is a cable car to Vitosha, which works all year round and is a favorite an attraction for both locals and tourists. But the main thing is in Sofia – it’s rhythm. But let’s be honest, Sofia is also about traffic jams. This is the biggest traffic in the country. And, to Unfortunately, in winter there are problems with smog, with air quality. This is the price for the status of the capital. And this is the price for economy. Sofia is a city where they make money. But it is necessary understand, Bulgaria is the country with the lowest salaries across the European Union. Find here high-paying job It’s difficult. It’s a beautiful country, to spend money. But to earn money It’s very difficult here. If Sofia is the brain of Bulgaria, then Plovdiv is her soul. The city that older than Rome and Athens. He literally stands on the foundation ancient Roman civilization. And this stone breathes history. But he lives Today is not the past. It lives galleries, crafts and the incredible creative atmosphere of the Kapana quarter. Its main pearl is perfectly preserved Roman amphitheaters where events are still held concerts. There are about 200 in Plovdiv historical monuments protected state. But Plovdiv – it’s not just the old town, This is Kapana, the creative quarter. a labyrinth of streets where galleries live, ceramics and textile workshops. In 2019, Plovdiv absolutely deservedly was the cultural capital Europe. But Plovdiv is a city absolute contrasts. It is in Plovdiv There is a district called Stolipino. It is one of largest gypsy ghettos in Europe with populations of different sizes estimates range from 20 to 40 thousand people. And this also part of Bulgaria. Seaside Park Varna is the most the famous and beautiful Varna Park, located on the Black Sea coast. For tourists it’s easy a beautiful road to the sea, and for the locals this is the real Varna. Varna is the sea capital. In tourist Varna is often mentioned in guidebooks are described by three facts. The third largest city, a major port and Golden Sands resort. It’s true, but it’s a look a tourist who sees only the facade. Burgas is Varna’s eternal competitor in the south. Burgas is more compact than Varna, and considered by many to be more European in terms of development. Yes, there is a port here and Lukoil oil refinery, which is located behind the city, near the lakes. The main bonus of Burgas – proximity to Istanbul. A little over an hour by car and you are already in Turkey. For shopping lovers or excursions are a strong argument. And, of course, Nessebar. This is a separate story. A peninsula city included in UNESCO. People live in the new city, and in the old history lives. But Bulgaria is not only these cities. There is a former capital of Bulgaria Veliko Tarnovo, hovering over the river. Wooden poetry, Koprivshtitsa, quiet crafts Kotela and Zheravny. On a compact map like the Bulgarian one, density of characters It’s simply amazing here. Culture in Bulgaria. This is not just posters and scenes. Here, reading rooms have been around since the 19th century. This is a unique phenomenon, which is difficult to translate. These are public cultural houses where they live on the same site under the same roof library, choir, theatre stage and children’s clubs. This is the heart of any small town. And there are still people alive here riddles and ancient customs. Every year on March 1st in Bulgaria exchange “martenitsas”, red and white decorations from twisted threads for good luck. And in the south of the country, in the Rhodope Mountains, it is still you can see the Nestenars dancing barefoot on hot coals. And this is not a tourist attraction. This is an ancient ritual, object UNESCO Intangible Heritage. But perhaps the most incredible fact Bulgarian culture sounds now in deep space. Seriously. In 1977, NASA sent Voyager Golden Record with a message to extraterrestrial civilizations. And as one of the greatest musical achievements of mankind on par with Bach and Beethoven there They turned on a Bulgarian folk song “Изьлел е Делю Хайдутин” sung by Vali Balkan from Rhodopes. A voice from the Rhodope Mountains is flying right now outside the solar system. Think about it. UNESCO list for such a compact countries like Bulgaria are simply impressive. In Bulgaria 10 World Heritage sites. Rila Monastery. We talked about him. These are arcades, frescoes and the smell of pine needles all around. Boyana Church of St. Sophia. These are paintings from 1259. Think about it. These are the frescoes that were 100 years ahead of the Renaissance. Ancient Nesebar, city-museum. Thracian tombs of Kazanlak and Sveshtara- This is a look into the depths of centuries, where the paint survived thousands of years. Madara Horseman. A giant relief on a sheer cliff. The signature of history on the living wall. Srebarna on the Danube Biosphere Reserve… And there is Varna gold. Let me repeat, this is not “one of”. This is the oldest processed gold, found by humanity on planet Earth. It is more than 6000 years old. It’s for a millennium older than Egypt and Stonehenge. And it is kept here in Archaeological Museum of Varna. Well, what is Bulgaria without food? If you ask I know what Bulgaria smells like, she smells of scarlet smoke, aroma baked peppers and real “kiselo mlyako”. The main character is Shopsky salad. This is not just a salad, it is national flag on a plate. White cheese, green cucumbers, red tomatoes. And it tastes good only when tomatoes really do smell like the sun, and feta cheese (sirene) is salty and proper. In the summer heat, Tarator is a salvation. This is a cold soup based on the same Bulgarian “kiselo mlyako”, with cucumber, dill and walnuts. The uniqueness of “sour milk” in bacteria is Lactobacillus Bulgaricus. It was first isolated in 1905 by a Bulgarian scientist Stamen Grigorov. He tamed this bacterium, and it was she who gives the same unique taste and benefits. And yes, real Bulgarian Yogurt is impossible without it. Pie. It’s a layered pastry and Each family has its own recipe. It’s hard in winter artillery. Kapama and Kavarma. And the meat classic is grill, kebabs, grilled meatballs. But how to get around the country? There are trains running between the cities. comfortable buses. Interesting fact, many cities have electronic scoreboards and applications for tracking transport in real time. Taxi prices, by the way, are also comparatively low by European standards. There are also trains. But let’s be honest, the Bulgarian railways roads (BDZ) – this is not the country’s strongest point. The main air gateways are airports Sofia, Varna and Burgas. Low cost airlines sometimes fly all over Europe for ridiculous prices. My friend arrived from Germany for 18 euros. This is the reality of European low-cost airlines, which has become the norm for Bulgaria. Schengen, as I already said, simplified connections and routes. Fewer corridors, more time for travel. But the main transport here is the car. Car rental reveals the real Bulgaria. For all roads except city, a vignette is required here. This is an electronic road tax. You can buy it online in 5 minutes. But without her, it is guaranteed fine from ubiquitous cameras. Don’t risk it. There are no problems with the Internet. In large cities the 5G network is stable, and almost all the rest the territory is covered by 4G. From Sofia it’s a stone’s throw to Skopje, Niš, Belgrade. From Plovdiv it’s an hour to the Greek border. To the Mediterranean Sea about 50 km from the southern border. From Burgas it’s 4 hours to Istanbul. Car trips in the Balkans are a separate pleasure. Morning in Sofia, lunch in Plovdiv, evening by the sea in Burgas. Given the distances here, this is no mean feat, and a normal road that is convenient adjust to your own pace. But for my story to be honest, I need to I’d like to say one more thing. Bulgaria is a paradox. It’s a wonderful country to live in, enjoy and spend money. But to earn them It’s much more complicated here. Bulgaria has the lowest salaries throughout the European Union. And this is the main reason. Why are there so many Bulgarians? works in other countries? But this detail helps to understand the character of the country more deeply. To understand that slight sadness in the eyes of old people and the incredible energy of youth. So what is Bulgaria like? At the end of this journey I can one thing is for sure – she is real. She is complete, a distinctive European country. There is a sea, mountains and incredible A rich map of UNESCO sites. Schengen removed unnecessary borders, and the euro will simplify all calculations. Everything else is it’s a matter of your personal taste. A noisy festival in Plovdiv or a quiet trail in the Rhodope Mountains? Dramatic northern cliffs or lazy southern promenades? Bulgaria is a living bridge between the East and the West, ancient and modern. And the most valuable thing about it is that in this the country has it incredibly easy choose your own rhythm. I hope this information was useful and will help you make the right decision. I expect you to rate my video. Write comments, like. Subscribe to my channel so you don’t Skip my new interesting videos.
