CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) – After statistics show there has been a a 388% increase in cooking fires over the daily average, the Carson City Fire Department offered tips for staying safe in the kitchen especially on Thanksgiving.
In 2023, about 1,446 home cooking fires were reported to U.S. fire departments on Thanksgiving Day, according to the National Fire Protection Association®.
Fire officials urge chefs to:
Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop.
When cooking a turkey, remain at home and check it regularly.
Use timers to keep track of cooking times.
Keep things that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels) at least 3 feet away from the cooking area.
Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that can come in contact with a heat source.
For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.
Stand on the side of the oven and open the door once the fire is out.
If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department.
Keep children and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
