BRYN MAWR, PA — With Thanksgiving kitchens running at full tilt, Aqua Pennsylvania is urging homeowners to think twice before rinsing holiday leftovers down the drain, warning that fats, oils, and grease are responsible for a surge in clogged pipes each year.

According to the utility, the Friday after Thanksgiving — known for heavy shopping — is also the busiest day of the year for plumbers. The cause: cooking byproducts that cool, harden, and block both home plumbing and community wastewater systems.

Aqua is advising residents to follow several key steps to reduce the risk of backups, including allowing grease to cool in a metal can before throwing it away, scraping plates into the trash, using sink strainers to trap food scraps and reminding others in the household to keep solids out of drains. The utility also stressed that garbage disposals do not prevent grease build-up and that so-called “flushable” wipes should never enter the wastewater system.

Improper disposal, Aqua noted, can cause significant damage, including sewage backups and overflows that impact entire neighborhoods. The company has released an animated video to help customers better understand how to prevent avoidable clogs during the busy holiday season.
