
I cooked some burgers today and for some reason, the amount of smoke produced was significantly higher than usual. I've never had this issue before and the only difference was using some old coals leftover from a previous grilling. I combined these older, partially-used briquettes with new ones to start the fire. Any ideas what i did wrong.

Did you give the briquettes yime to heat up before starting to grill?
If you dumped the newly lit briquettes on the old one the old ones will generate a lot of smoke before warming up and getting lit.
Hard to say if it’s suffocating, not clean burning yet or a grease fire without seeing the fire.
I’m glad I saw this because I get smoke coming out of the sides as well. I thought my new kettle was damaged somehow
Wet ashes and charcoal can create white smoke.
Where were your vents?
Probably got wet coals.
Fatty meats like burgers and brats should be cooked uncovered if over direct coals. If you’re going to cook with the lid on, it’s best to either cook them indirectly first then uncover for direct or uncovered direct first then cover at the end.
But never direct & covered. In this instance, I believe you have a grease fire under the dome.
