I had a craving for a Jim Shoe sandwich so I stopped by Famous Grill, a carryout joint located adjacent to a Citgo gas station. I've been here before; they make a decent Red Hot Chicago hot dog.

Some graphic artist really went wild decorating the inside and outside of this carry-out joint. The place is covered from head to toe with pictures of their menu listings and these offerings are a sight to behold.

These types of restaurants are scattered around the south side. Your food is presented to you through a bullet proof lazy Susan. They offer a combination of burgers, Phillies, Krispy Phillies, gyros, Jim Shoes (also spelled Gym Shoe and Jim Shoo), burritos, tacos, beefs, subs, melts, sausages, pita sandwiches…They even offer a "Jim Shoo Salad" for the calorie-conscious consumer. These match-makers will pair up any random combination to form an unholy matrimony of fast food and I would try every one of these devilish amalgamations. It is a good thing I don't live at 85th and Ashland because this gas station grill could easily become a hangout for me and I have been warned about people who hang out in gas stations. A fast food enthusiast could eat a different meal here every day for a year and still not get through their entire menu. Turkey Patty Melt, Chicken Sandwich with Gyros Meat, Gym Shoe Burrito, Italian Beef Burrito, Super Taco on Pita… There are are no bounds at Famous Grill; the combinations are endless.

I watched the chef cook my Shoe. He buttered French bread and lightly toasted it on the flat top then added chopped hot Italian beef, gyros, and corned beef meat, topped it with lettuce, tomato, mayo, and giardinera, and neatly wrapped into its tight paper pouch. My sandwich was excellent, just what I was craving.
