Does this work the same as the ninja creami thingy?
I'm a student, and I can't afford a Ninja Creami machine. Only these old-looking machines are within my budget. Can I still get by with this?

Good news, these “old looking machines” use pretty much the same method we have been using to make icecream for the past 150 years. Just replaced hand cranking with an electric motor and salt & ice with a reusable freezer bowl that cools your mix as the material in the bowl melts.
I would say you are probably getting an even better result using one of these, there is a reason why they have been virtually unchanged for the past 150+ years.
