The original Chex Mix was created in the early 1950s. This original recipe, called “Party Mix,” combined Rice Chex and Wheat Chex with nuts, butter, and seasonings like Worcestershire and garlic salt. Corn Chex was added to the mix later, in 1958.

The Chex Mates would be nice, wish they were still around

It’s interesting that this recipe uses 6 cups of Chex, 6 tablespoons of butter and 4 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce while the modern recipe calls for 9 cups of Chex, 6 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of butter.

3/4 teaspoon onion powder OR 3/8 teaspoon garlic powder. Never both! You don’t want to explode your guests’ taste buds with too much flavour. But salt is the primary flavour anyway: it’s in the butter, the whore-sister sauce, the seasoning salt, and the mixed nuts.
I would still eat this no matter how it was made, though.

Making some this weekend. Adding nuts, Chez-its, and the rye crisps if I can find them.

I feel super vindicated. Current recipe has 1 cup each more of the Chex along with pretzels and several other things but nowhere near enough butter. This ratio seems a lot more reasonable.

Used to make this with Lawrys as the seasoning. From this exact recipe when I was growing up
