I use the malcom reed line of seasonings and I just discovered they have more in the grilling isle. Suggestions? I grabbed a thing of killer hogs steak rub and blue hogs All In.

KILLER HOGS all the way. Love his stuff. And not only are his rubs great quality, his YouTube videos are amazing.
Many rubs are just dehydrated, mixed junk that I feel doesn’t sit on the meat well or make a good bark. Look for ones that are just a mixture of pure spices, not dehydrated granules. Just my two-cents.

Kinders makes some good ones. Surprised I don’t see Meat Church.

I like to look at the ingredients, I’m not a fan of anything with salt listed first.

Be mindful of salt. Theses pre made seasonings tend to already have a lot of Salt so considering you need to add more. I prefer kosher and sea salt over table salt so these pre mades are usually not on my preference list.

Agree with both Killer Hogs and Blues Hog. Would throw some Heith Riles in there too. Specifically the Garlic Jalapeno if they have it.

Go to the grocery story, buy salt, pepper, and paprika. Congrats, now you have 99% of commercial rubs. Add in some garlic powder, onion powder, and/or sugar if you want, and some sort of chili powder if you want more heat.

To everyone saying make your own, I salute you I got a household of 5 kids age ranging from 3 months to 8. 😅 Plus I’m a simple salt and pepper man, I wouldn’t know where to start with making my own. I’m okay with overpaying and buying premade. Saves the sanity I have left.
Spicology makes some good rubs and seasoning mixes… the two on the bottom right of the rack aren’t top choices unfortunately. Meat Church holy voodoo or the gospel (not pictured) are good ones to keep on hand. Everyone has their personal preferences. That’s the fun part you get to try a bunch and figure out what works best for you. Or as others have said make a rub yourself. I like making my own so I can reduce the salt. Some rubs are way too salty IMO

My hot take? Make your own rub, it’ll taste better. Find a flavor profile you like, experiment with the balance of spices required for that profile, and eventually you’ll have a rub that suits your taste and is far superior to anything you can find in the store.
I’m not sure I’ve ever used same store bought rub twice. Once bottle is gone I forget all about it. And my homemade is quite fluid, sometimes it includes remnants of leftover rib of different recipe.. And I’ve never had anything turn out bad. I used one last night I bought at a store. If you put gun to my head the only thing I could tell you about it is that the name has the word “rub” in it and maybe a little sweeter than I wanted. Maybe. It was fine. I’ll use it until bottle empty or mix with homemade stuff.
Yeah, you heard me.

Sugar + Brown sugar + Salt
That’s a pretty basic mixture for a good meat cure.
From there you can branch out and try whatever you feel like or have in the cabinet.
For example, do that basic curing mixture, and then add some ancho chilli powder, garlic, black pepper, paprika, etc.
There’s almost no wrong way to go about it.

It’s been said but killer hogs is great. I have their rib rub and use it a lot. Kinders though…..they have me hooked like a big fish. I use the Blend spg on almost everything, their Prime Rib blend is awesome on steak or eggs. Their Cowboy Butter is good on pork and chicken. They have mesquite smoked salt and pepper. Their general purpose butcher seasoning is a good all rounder but I usually put it on chicken. And their wood fired Garlic is probably my favorite blend they make.

I look at the ingredients list specifically for one or both of these ingredients: disodium guanylate (E627) and disodium inosinate.
If you have some msg in the cupboard, spices, and salt, that rub containing GMP and IMP will bring your bbq to the stratosphere.

The sad part is, because of FDA regulations, none of these taste like the creators intended. Just had to put that out there.
