An Italian cheese sold under the Boar’s Head, Member’s Mark (Sam’s Club), Locatelli and Pinna brands has been recalled because it may be contaminated with listeria.
Wegmans also issued its own recall for the Locatelli brand cheese it sells in plastic tubs.
Ambriola Co. of West Caldwell, New Jersey, issued the recall for grated Pecorino Romano cheese that was distributed to retail stores nationwide between Nov. 3 and Nov. 20, according to a company announcement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The company said “routine testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
In healthy people, short-term symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Infections in pregnant women can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The company said no illnesses have been reported to date.
