ATTALLA, Ala. (WBRC) – One local church in east Alabama decided to give away food boxes to feed families for a week instead of one day.

Shawn Blackmon with the Unity Church in Attalla says this idea was about allowing parents time with their children and teaching them how to prepare a meal instead of being handed one already prepared.

With the goal of giving away 30 boxes, Blackmon says they partnered with a number of local agencies in Birmingham to make it happen. He says it’s not about how many boxes you give but the impact it has on someone’s life.

“They get their choice of a ham or a turkey. They get a hen and they get an actual food box that has mash potatoes, it has corn muffin mix in it, it has peach cobbler mix, it has a couple of cans for the peach cobbler mix,” said Blackmon.

Blackmon says if this gesture of serving others helps unify a community then the church has accomplished its job.
