The Smoking Gods threw a few challenges at us today.

I realized I didn’t have charcoal, ran to my bbq store in the hope they were at least open a half day. Nope. Rolled the dice on a bag in Kroger. It had tiny pieces and bark chips in it that had never been cooked. Fine. Rolling with what I got.

Took the cover off the BJ3, opened the lid to load the charcoal, and the control tower fell off. With the ceramic collar still in it.

Oh well, here we go. Fired it up anyway, propped the tower on top and adjusted it as well as I could.

Lots of leaks around the dome but I was able to make it work.

Filed my warranty claim watching the Packers and Lions. Wish me luck.

Warranty. The same thing happened to me. Send pictures for them to send a new top piece.

Recently busted mine just like this and they honored the lifetime warranty no questions asked. I couldn’t even get the serial number and they still hooked it up.

Wow. Glad you were able to make it work.

My brief heart attack today: First we smoked a batch of candied pecans around 325-350. Then, when I went to put the turkey on, the temperature had shot up to 425 – way too high. I shut the lower vent, sprayed some water on the coals, and got it back down to 325 for the turkey in time to keep dinner on schedule.

Nothing beats gravy made from smoked turkey drippings!
