Speaking of Reubens – are they a new York centric/USA thing or do other countries enjoy this delight?

I haven’t had a Reuben outside of the states! Definitely feels like a deli thing I’ve had good ones in Michigan, Illinois and NY

I LOVE these sandwiches. They have them in Montreal too, but people seem to gravitate to simple smoked meat sandwiches, but man, the lettuce/cabbage with the cheese and delicious sauce PLUS the smoked meat/pastrami/etc is my favourite! Huge fan!

I believe they originated in Nebraska. I’m not sure anything coming out of there makes it outside the US.

I had this one temp job years ago and that’s where I first heard of Reubens which became one of my favorite sandwiches. I worked in an office with an attached factory and one of the factory guys made Reuben’s once a year and heated them up wrapped in foil on one of the heat presses.

I have a place where I get Reubens here in New Orleans, but I wouldn’t order it off just any menu that has it, even though they are served in plenty of restaurants and delis. I’d be more inclined to order one in NYC than anywhere else in the states.

So to be one of the people actually answering the question, i think it’s mostly a North American thing. There are probably sandwiches similar elsewhere but they’d be different enough to be distinct

I’ve had a number of decent Reubens in different countries in Europe, but not many. The sandwich is not actually from NYC, appropriate since I’ve never had a good one there. Pastrami on Rye, though, that’s a different story.

  8. I’m from UK and they’re becoming a much bigger thing over here, will find them in most deli type shops now.

Actually going to Dublin next week and going to visit an NY style sandwich deli https://www.littlegenos.ie/sandwiches and the options are putting me in a spin! Might have to be a few visits during the trip.

It’s a diner and deli staple in much of the US.

Haven’t heard of it being a huge thing in other countries but I’m pretty sure it’s crossed over to certain ones

Yes. I live in Limerick, Ireland (pop 114k) and I know of at least two restaurants that serve Reubens here.

Best Reuben I’ve ever had was in Montreal!

They make in Germany nowadays. Still, the best I’ve had was in Wisconsin from an Amish food stand.

They’re an American sandwich. And they’re really not a NY centric thing, they’re a German American thing. I have some Nebraskan family members who would take exception to you calling it that lmao

  13. We had a Reuben at the Mercado in Old Town Zaragoza, Spain. It was not served on marble, or other rye bread, and was a bit shy on the meat, but it was still pretty good and quite unexpected.

They’re often sold in Australia. Although probably different to the US version

Haven’t seen a Rueben built like that in the states.

A good cafe in Australia will often have a Reuben on the toasted sandwich menu. They vary a bit from location to location I find, but I’ll often give them a go and mostly enjoy them.

I have a Reuben on my cafe menu in Australia. Reasonably popular.

If they aren’t, they damn well should be.

Reubens are the greatest sandwich ever invented. I don’t say that lightly. Sandwiches are one of my favorite things on earth, and there’s many that are phenomenal. But this particular one is perfect…it can’t be improved upon.

  19. Austin used to have a great deli, I think it was Katz’s. Fantastic Rueben’s but it’s been closed for like a decade or more. Sad, really. *EDIT: damn, just went to check myself on it, and it is coming back! Nice!

The best one I’ve ever had was at a golf course between Denver and Boulder, it was made with Bison meat, it was so tender

  21. I’m in Ajax, Ontario, Canada, and Reubens are in a lot of restaurants here. Until a few years ago, we had more than a few Druxy’s Famous Deli locations. They’re certainly not scarce. I make my own Russian dressing for mine, personally, and get thick cut corned beef and sliced Swiss cheese from my local deli. One of my favourite sandwiches.

What kind of bread is that and where does the pattern come from?

I have never ever seen a Reuben sandwich in continental Europe. This particular combination of ingredients in a sandwich is really unusual…

  23. TheLadyEve

I had a Reuben in Canada once, but I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

  24. Citizen_Kano

There’s a few places that sell them where I live in New Zealand

I’m Filipino and there’s a Swiss themed deli in the town I was born that had a Reuben, but now they call it a pastrami on rye. Any time I’m in that spot, I always get that.

  26. Material-Gur6580

We can get them in Canada. They use Montreal smoked meat.
