Genghis Cohen reopened in their new location 3 days ago. The interior aesthetics are great but the food was really disappointing and took forever to come out. The turkey dumpling filling was bland while the sauce was overly salty. The crispy noodles w/beef were some of the worst I’ve had in LA, with noodles that were way too hard and sauce that was too salty and generally lacked any flavor besides soy sauce. The honey garlic pork chops were over-battered and fried so long that they were too hard and dried out. The mocktail was mostly flavorless too. At least everything looked good and the service was nice. They just opened here so maybe they’ll dial it in with the food in the coming weeks.
$73 for everything (with tax, before tip). Valet parking only. Great vibes. Full menu at the bar. Cash or card accepted. Very good service. Slow kitchen. 4/10 (below average)

You mean the decor? Because the food looks terrible.
It’s so disappointing what happened to that place. I remember crushing those delicious leftover dumplings
In the morning before anyone was awake as a little kid back in the 80’s. My wife and I went there 6 or 7 years ago and were thoroughly underwhelmed. Too bad they couldn’t get their shit together.
That’s too bad because I love the name of that place.
Hah it can always be hard to find a good chef. I went there to see a friend play and ordered the tofu and shrimp they had at the time. My two friends got their entres and ate and I sat there as I continued waiting for the dish. Finally I told my friend to go into the side room and I’ll be there after I finish and hopefully it’s coming out soon.
I sat there another 20 minutes. I finally realized they didn’t have any tofu on hand and probably sent a worker to the supermarket. Pretty sure that’s what happened but that was years ago. Anyway sorry to hear it was mediocre and hopefully they know and will get it together better.
What I’m thinking is stuff might have been overcooked because it was parcooked and got overcooked. Again it can be tough finding chefs in town despite pretty good talent there.
They also fuck over live bands that play there with shitty pay lol
Is this a famous place or something? The name sounds funny
Very good service, slow kitchen? I’ve always considered service to include kitchen 😬
Used to be our favorite spot, years ago. Paper wrapped chicken was the bomb.
Went recently, couldn’t eat my food.
Awful. So sad to say goodbye.
I’m not hitting up a chinese spot where there’s no old Chinese dude smoking a cigarette over a hot wok.
besides the dumplings the food looks like something from a chinese restaurant in the mid-west from the 80’s.
lol
Did you hear people yelling some chinese in the back? If not, that’s is exactly why.
Moving can’t be easy, adjusting to a new kitchen and all that. I hope they’ll settle in after a bit. The food has never been amazing but was always passable. It was always about the experience. Now they’re in the cursed part of Fairfax, but according to their announcement it’s only a temporary spot. I do wish them luck and hope the food recovers.
Cool venue tho. Seen so many great bands there
Just from looking at the menu, I could’ve told you it wouldn’t have been any good. From an authentic standpoint anyway.
It’s OK Chinese in a fancy building. Hipsters love this shit.
The original had pretty unremarkable food. I went once, and never returned because there are so many restaurants with real food. To think it’s even worse, perhaps not surprising. Thanks for the information.
The food at the new location is EXACTLY the same as their old location. Their food has been super consistent for decades, which I find to be super rare in L.A. It’s legit and I know a lot of people that love it.
what did you think of the old one
That looks like regular Chinese-American take out … slow kitchen? … the food looks like it should be prepared on a wok? Oh it’s located in Fairfax … maybe they don’t use a wok — the veg don’t even got a sear to them.
Doesn’t even look good
Looks like chinese food served in some 90s american movie
Wow those dishes LOOK awful. The broccoli beef looks like it came out of boiling water.
Used to be my favorite place! Then it all changed in like 2018…. changed their home made large egg rolls to pre-frozen, quality of ingredients went down… kept going back thinking it was a one-off… unfortunately not the case. I wish they would have just raised prices instead of skimping on quality.
Thought this move could have been a chance to go back to it’s roots. Apparently not.
Not surprised. I found the food at the old location disappointing too.
Was also frustrated that the meal didn’t come with an egg roll or soup/salad. That feels like classic Chinese American to me.
