The whole ‘stuck with toothpicks suspended over a cup of water’ thing is mostly just popular because it makes good pictures for social media with the roots visible. It isn’t actually a good way to grow anything. You’ll have a much harder time getting the plant any nutrition than you would if it were in a proper growing medium, the roots get less oxygen, and the toothpick damage provides an entry for bacteria and fungi.
