Hi everyone, I came here to see if there is any recovery for these grates. My boyfriend bought me a new grill (early Christmas) and it was delivered by Home Depot in this condition. Before contacting their support I do try to clean the grates with some cleaner I typically use for my other grill (same brand). However I had no luck and the grates still look the same.

Otherwise we have to have them pick this one up and wait for another delivery, and hope those grates are not rusted.

  1. I am by no means an expert, but I would not be OK with this.
That said, wait for more comments, because maybe it’s considered normal now, and you’re expected to clean them before using? I hope that is not the case.

Take that that thing back. Id call ahead and let them know the situation with the rusted grates, they may just give you clean grates instead of returning the whole thing.

Send it back. There’s zero accountability for sellers these days. It’s time for the consumer to stand up and take back control of quality. This is unacceptable.

That looks like a clearance tag which might mean it’s sold as is. I’d check the warranty just in case

  5. They’re outside all of the time, so I would expect this to be normal in most places.

They’re gonna get covered in burnt grease so if the rest of the grill is in good shape don’t worry about it

they look to be cast iron… if they are, this is normal when unseasoned….

to clean, use some vinegar to remove what i call flash rust. you can either do this in the kitchen sink or in a plastic bin/bucket. just wet a cloth in white vinegar and run them down, then dry with a clean cloth or paper towels.

next, use cooking spray, or a rag that is dipped in cooking oil. wipe the grates to give a light coat of oil and then place in your oven at 400* F over a cookie sheet for 30 minutes. this will season them to stop them from getting a rust coating…

  8. The amount of people in this sub that 1) think rust is the bogeyman that’s going to make all your food taste bad and make your tires wear unevenly and 2) have no idea how to take care of cast iron grates is frankly comical to me.

You’ve got cast iron grates. It’s flash rust, it happens. As another comment said, hit them with a vinegar solution to clean them, or even just a good scrub with a wire brush, and then either way, wipe them down with vegetable oil IMMEDIATELY (or they’ll rust again). Season them like you would a cast iron pan, and you’re going to be fine.

Those are cast iron grates, I would clean and reseason the same way you would with a cast iron pan. Visit r/castiron for tips on that.

  10. Maybe use Bar Keeper’s Friend to remove the rust

You lost when you purchased a char broil grill to begin with. Terrible quality.

Who cares? It’s cast iron clean it and preseason

I usually just give them a vigorous rub down with steel wool.

I see it’s a chargriller. I seem to remember mine came with instructions on how to season the cast iron grates. I’ve had to use a wire brush on mine and clean them up. Then follow the instructions. For me I used canola oil and high heat. After they’re seasoned they don’t tend to rust unless you don’t use them for extended periods of time.

There’s a great guide to seasoning cast iron pinned to the top of the cast iron sub. Clean the grates with vinegar and follow that. You’ll be golden.

  16. Scrub with steel wool light up your grill then season it right away. It is actually better this way than having it coated with industrial protective coating.
Cast iron will rust. And a bit of rust if fine when cleaned a bit.

Contact store for replacement. It they won’t return the whole thing and get a refund and buy somewhere else.

  18. Rub it with oil and fire it up. Then rub it with oil again while hot. Should be good after that.
