These things are known to be a risk, especially considering quality isn’t priority. Best scrubber is a bit of chainmail. If love youd close ones love you (or yourself) look up the better scrubber from smarter everyday.

Good to know, but here’s my totally unrelated rant – I wish these short-type videos came with full transcripts so I can just read the thing in 20 seconds instead of having to listen to someone talk on and on for 2.5 minutes

Went straight to comments instead — BTW I’ve never brushed a grill. I burn it and rub onion on it.

I use a thinly chopped piece of firewood to scrape off the carbon from the grill grates. I usually clean it as I’m getting the fire hot enough for my current cook. I was initially worried about splinters posing the same risk as the wire bristles but they just burned off since I used it while the fire was burning high.

The idea of this is freaky, but I gotta think that this must be an extremely rare occurrence. Think of the millions of grills getting cleaned with these brushes on a regular basis. I bet sickness from poor food handling is way more common.

You aren’t cleaning your grill well at all if shit sticks to it after brushing it. That must have been some gross ass food either way if stuff stuck to it before putting meat on it.

The best “safe” brush I’ve found is the grillbadger (no, I’m not affiliated with them, not linking it, just simply a happy customer). The metal coil ones don’t do shit. The nylon ones don’t either since they have to be used on a cold grill, so nothing scrapes off. Tried foil but can’t really get between the grates well, and the foil flakes off anyway.
The grillbadger does as good of a job as the metal brushes without discarding shards of metal into your food.

Sorry but if you miss an inch of wire in your hamburger you are not chewing but inhaling it.

My favorite section of Discover Magazine was about medical mysteries and the process of solving them. I’d love to see more videos like this.

Always follow up a wire brushing with some paper towel. It’s the only way to b be sure.

My wife is a pediatrician and follows her. This content is as much for other docs as it is for us dummies who are interested in hearing a story.

I’m an ER doctor and I’ve seen this once as well (in an adult).
Rags2Rickius
I used these until I found a spine stuck on the grill one time
Never used one again

nothing cleans grates better than a wire brush. Just avoid those super cheap brushes like at the dollar store, replace your brush after a year or so of use, and follow up your wire brushing with a non-wire brushing the clear any wire bristles in the extremely rare event they dislodged.

It baffles me that the attorneys of any company that produces BBQ equipment (Weber for example) allows these on the market.

Just get to the point! 10 second clip. “Kid swallowed a grill brush metal thingy that got lodged in his hamburger. Took us a month and tons of tests to figure out what it was”.
Past_Explanation69
1. Metal wire brushes are fine to use, don’t use worn ones and also double check the grates for anything before grilling.
2. What a shit hospital that it takes that many trips to diagnose an issue, should have been found on the 2nd trip tops.

I know this happens but I still don’t understand how. If a wire breaks off the brush wouldn’t it fall into the ash? How would it stay on the grate and get into the food?
Rimworldjobs
I dont clean mine anymore. I just smoke everything over a sheet pan.

Would any of y’all be able to link me some of your preferred brushes/scrubbers?

Sharing this – chain mail grill brush, made almost entirely in the USA, developed by the guy from the Smarter EveryDay youtube channel – and watch his video about it where he discusses just how damn hard it was for him to find companies in the US to make the components:
