I was thoroughly impressed by the steak I got from Outback Steakhouse last night (pictured) and it got me thinking, “which chain restaurant has the best steak?”

The flavor and preparation was terrific for the price (~$33 for a 13 oz. ribeye and two sides) and the value far exceeded my expectations…a similar cut from my local supermarket costs me about $20-$25.

I enjoy the process of cooking at home and also love going to a fancy steakhouse from time to time, but this recent experience has me thinking I’m missing out on some great, affordable steaks at chain restaurants. Where should I try next?

Texas Roadhouse, honorary mention to the honey cinnamon butter rolls

Texas Roadhouse is the best chain steak place. At least around here.

Great prime rib. But you’re gunna have to go early if you want it.

Hands down, Outback, for me. I think the others are bland and lack seasoning. Plus, Outback is the only one who seems to cook it correctly for me

I worked at 3 of the big 4(saltgrass, longhorn, outback) and I think longhorn was the best

Longhorn period for “budget” then Ruth’s Chris for splurging.

Outback and longhorn for flavor, Texas Roadhouse for quality.

Texas roadhouse & longhorn steakhouse are genuinely unbeaten

Longhorn,Texas Roadhouse. Last time I went to Outback I couldn’t even eat the steak.

For chains I like Ruth’s Chris, Capital Grille, and Morton’s.

Saltgrass then outback then chilis. Chilis is surprisingly good at steaks

  11. In Canada, it depends on what you consider a chain. Hy’s is the best, but there are only 5 of them. The Keg is the best true chain.

Where I live, it’s Outback. Texas Roadhouse is a very close second.

Texas Roadhouse filet is number one in my book

I am a huge fan of Outback. I love the crust from their searing.

I like outback the best. It’s very nostalgic for me though so I might be blinded a bit but I think they’re better than Texas roadhouse (which is my 2nd)

For the price, Texas Roadhouse is hard to beat.

Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn, and Outback for a budget steakhouse, not necessarily in that order. They’re all great but I’d say Texas is probably my favorite because of the rolls. I just wish they’d turn the music down a bit lol

I think there are two tiers, at least on price, for chain steakhouses, and for the lower priced tier (where I would include Outback, Longhorn, Texas Roadhouse, etc.) I think the results are significantly dependent on management/cooks. Here where I live TR has quickly risen to the top of this list.

The more expensive tier (Ruth’s Chris, Flemming’s, Morton’s, etc.) I’ve found to be a lot more consistent, and while also with some variability in quality that range is a lot smaller than the lower priced outlets. I call these “expense account restaurants,” due to the price, but to their credit their wine lists are solid if overpriced.

My wife and I went to outback recently because e had a gift card. We splurged and each got the filet. I ordered mine rare, she ordered hers med rare. It took overly long to get our food. I told my wife it was going to be effed up. Sure enough both were nearly well done.

Showed the server and he laughed. He said all their stakes are like that. We will never ever go back.

Hands down Texas Roadhouse and Black Angus for the price point I think this question is going for amd consistency across multiple locations. Ruth Chris if price doesn’t matter. Now best steak I ever had was at a Gordon Ramsey steakhouse in Baltimore. I tried other locations of his though and they weren’t as good.

The only chain steakhouse I’ve been to is Flat Iron. Was pretty good and reasonably priced.

Longhorn and it isn’t particularly close.

I think it depends on the area…

I’ve eaten steaks across California, in Houston, in Las Vegas, Hawaii and others…

I’d say SF Bay Area California and Las Vegas are the two areas with exceptional quality steaks being common.

(Houston has them, less common and more expensive)

Ruth’s Chris if you’re talking expensive chains too…
    If “regular” steakhouses?

Black Angus is my favorite, hands down.

Outback is inconsistent, but usually decent.

I always enjoyed a good Outback steak. I never had luck at a Texas Roadhouse or a spot like that.

  26. dj_hobbes

I’m surprised no one has mentioned it, but Texas de Brazil is my top.

  27. official_gart

Longhorn def best chain steak but Outback is super slept on imo

  28. Longhorn or Texas Roadhouse for the cheaper chains, people hate on it but I think Ruth’s Chris for the fancier chains.

  29. Fluid-Pain554

Longhorn, and by miles. They understand how to season, they understand what makes a good crust, they consistently deliver good steaks.

For a general, casual steak restaurant that’s amazing, it’s Texas Roadhouse. In the Houston area, the honor goes to Perry’s. In the Seattle area, it’s Daniel’s Broiler.
