A special bottle we enjoyed this weekend: Échézeaux 2020 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

My first time tasting anything from DRC (that was not heat damaged), and honestly… the restaurant price made it almost impossible to say no. And I’m so glad we didn’t. It was absolutely fantastic.

The nose opens with incredible purity: red cherries, wild strawberries, rose petals, and some nice spice. There’s also so much complexity with many layers that you notice with every new sip.

On the palate, it’s absolute elegance: silky, refined, and wonderfully balanced. The tannins are ultra-fine, almost powdery, yet the structure is clearly there and a reminder of how young this wine still is. With some air it gains depth, showing more layers and a long, graceful finish.

Already beautiful… but it’s easy to imagine how truly spectacular this will be in 5+ years. As they say, most DRC bottles in restaurants will be drunk too early. This was not an exception but I’m still glad we did. I get the fascination for the wines from DRC now.

Sounds like it was truly incredible- no need to worry about the nerds who will come here saying it’s too young, like who cares lol. You saw the opportunity and were rewarded for it. Your notes are fantastic and evocative!!

Also how was the Dofouleur? I impulsively bid on their Fixin 1er monopole last week. Haven’t ever tried their wines

It’s a shame their wine is so god damned expensive. Seems like it would be a tasty glass of juice, but alas, I’m never going to spend a family vacation on a bottle.
