I’ve been known to share an opinion or two on knock boxes. Removal is really that simple.

My coffee station is 9 feet away. I make and drink my coffee and then flick out the cup after popping off the portafilter. No fuss, no mess.

I use an old Tupperware container because my machine isn’t near a trashcan

Please try a ridgeless basket and report back.

Compost instead of garbage but yeah definitely way easier.

Looks to me like your puck press isn’t ideal as that thing looked way too slushy (and loose) in your porter filter. If I tried that I’d be swinging for days. Mine always needs a knock to get it out, even right after I’ve pulled the shot

Yep, same with the aeropress. Knock boxes are so stupid. And before any compost people come crying about it, you can toss a puck into your compost the same way, also without a knock box.

Something wrong with your puck. This shouldnt work usually.

Mine sadly is almost always impossible to get out, I’m either banging it for 5 mins or wedging it out of the basket somehow

  9. What am I doing wrong that people’s pucks come out so easy 😭😭😭

  10. Well, I cannot get it out that easily so yeah, in my case, knock boxes are very much appreciated.

  11. shut your filthy mouth ! yes we do need it ! (i have one on the way so literally cannot aggree, have to justify the buy)

I like being able to hit a rubber rod and not have a chance of the basket falling into the trash, on top of the trash being in a different area of the kitchen.

Not every puck slides out like that, some need some smacks. Plus a decent knock box is like 15$. Using the grounds as compost is also a plus.

Every day we drift closer to r/espressocirclejerk

Do that a hundred times a day and report back the condition of your wrist and elbow.

  15. My Breville portafilter has a nice rubber ring on the handle that is meant for banging the puck out. I always just hit that on the edge of the trashcan.

I think there’s a benefit to having something that makes your food and drinks as far away from the trash as possible. I get how using the trash is free, but let’s not ignore there’s some level of benefit to a knock box.

💯 – exactly this. Shake or tap on the side of the compost box. Done. Clean.

Do not try and knock the puck. That’s impossible. Instead… only try to realize the truth… There is no puck.

It’s all fun and games until one morning you miss and it hits the edge/rim causing an explosion of tiny coffee particles.

You then look at the clock and it shows 4:30am, your wife is still sleeping- you can’t vacuum, so you go to grab the broom but once you exit the kitchen you remember you have a dog..

You rush back just to see your dog eating the coffee puck on the ground. Instinctively, you yell “NO!” but the dog gets frightened, tries to run, slips and rolls in the rest of the coffee grounds.

You have had enough, you decide you’re gonna enjoy your now lukewarm coffee and then deal with the mess so you grab the cup and turn around just to see your wife staring at you.

After a moment of silence, she proceeds to blame you for waking her up and tells you that the least you could do is clean up after your mess.

I just love that this sub loses its mind over a $2 knockbox.

  21. I have a small compost tin next to the machine. Unfortunately I have a puck screen. Would love to just dump the puck straight out. I normally wait a minute or two to let the puck and puck screen cool down before I separate the two.

  22. For me, putting a hot puck in the trash really makes it moist, wet, hot and promotes bacteria growth and thus smells. No bueno.

Jesus christ this sub is literally garbage now
