Chef notes
Mug cakes became quite the rage here in the States a few years back, and now, they have made it across the Atlantic to Italy. I was so excited to see Tazza di Torta popping up on menus during my last visit to Rome. I decided it would be fun to take my favorite Italian dessert, affogato, which is simply a scoop of gelato served with a hot pour of espresso on top, with mug cake. The cake is simple and gets a nice rich middle from the chocolate hazelnut spread. Then, the espresso and gelato take you right to the edge, of the mug, and your seat.
Technique tip: Have the gelato and hot espresso ready to go as soon as the cake comes out of the microwave.
Swap option: Any kind of gelato will work.
