Sometimes they’re missed. Theyre a very alien species to humans so it happens rarely. You’re lucky though! Lobster roe was a fav delicacy of mine and my fam in the 90s when we could eat that

    That’s a jackpot. They’re delicious.

Hi Reddit stranger, Long story short. Female Lobsters are perfectly legal to catch and sell.

The ones that have to be released are the ones that are pregnant with Eggs in the Underside of the tail. Essentially almost ready to lay the eggs.

    **EDIT**
In your picture, that is Lobster Tomolley, which functions as Liver / pancreas.
Doing some deeper research there can be some Unfertilized eggs mixed in.
Thanks Reddit strangers for some better understanding.

So You are not breaking any laws here bud! lol

if you report to costco you might actually save tons of lobsters. might be a fisherman who has a crew who only cares about lbs, and is endangering species for money.

if you don’t report could you give city costco you purchased these in, so other can report? each of those eggs could be potential lobsters for the ocean, we don’t want to see them gone for ecological reasons/culinary reasons.

i hope it’s just a mistake and not just a neglectful greedy fisherman.

That’s actually delicious and some consider it a delicacy!

You get the green stuff (Tomalley) and the Red stuff (Roe) both are considered delicacies by “some” people

Only female lobsters with active eggs are released (eggs on the outside)

Females are still caught and eaten (all females that reach maturity have eggs on the inside that are fine to catch)
