“The word is ‘surprising,'” one Test Kitchen pro said about this French Quarter cheese spread. When we saw the ingredients, we know this appetizer was going to be an interesting one, but we were not prepared for how delightful it was—and how much we really loved it.

The sweet and savory combination of flavors will really take you by surprise. The creamy base of the spread starts with cream cheese. Then punchy onion and garlic are added. A pecan mixture made with brown sugar starts the topping, but instead of staying entirely sweet, we add Worcestershire sauce, Creole mustard, and cayenne pepper.
The resulting bite (served on a Ritz cracker) is creamy, smooth, with a nice crunch that has a just-right pinch of heat. What goes best with that? Champagne at a party, of course.

Can I Prepare This Cheese Spread Ahead?
To get ahead of your party prep, you can prepare this dish ahead. Simply prepare the base and topping separately, spreading the cream cheese mixture onto a serving plate. Wrap tightly and chill for up to two days, with the topping in a separate airtight container in the refrigerator. Let the cream cheese base stand at room temperature until slightly softened, and warm the topping lightly on the stovetop for a pourable texture. Pour over the cream cheese spread before serving.
If you happen to have any leftovers after serving, spread over toast or a toasted croissant for a delicious breakfast or snack the next day.
What To Serve With French Quarter Cheese Spread
While buttery crackers are a natural accompaniment to this spread, you can also give your guests additional options by serving with toasted baguette slices, pita chips,or pretzel crisps. Sliced apples can add a crisp, fruity contrast. Pair with other crowd-pleasing party appetizers like a charcuterie board, stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, or a crudité.
