Like pop culture, trendy foods come and go. What’s all over everyone’s Instagram feeds one day may disappear from the menu altogether next week.

Recently, Reddit user u/Puzzleheaded-Law-429 asked, “What are some food and restaurant trends that have come and gone in the last 10 to 20 years?” Man, people’s answers unlocked some memories from DEEP in the recesses of my brain. Here are some of the once-popular trends that have kinda vanished:

1. “Black squid ink and charcoal everywhere.”

2. “Those shakes with slices of cake, donuts, Twizzlers, etc. Food waste on a cup.”

3. “Around 15 years ago, cupcakes were everywhere. Every neighborhood had at least one gourmet cupcake shop. If you went to a party, someone would come in announcing “I brought Sprinkles!!!” and people would gather around like they were a relative returning from a foreign war. Some places sold ‘giant cupcakes,’ which were actually just small cakes. The cupcake ATM was a newsworthy event reported on across the country. No fad has come close in my memory.”
