Decided to clean the grinder, Baratza Encore ESP, got to the outer burr and notice it was cracked, and then it obliterated when being removed.

I don’t even adjust the grind size that often.

It’s under a year old so maybe I’ll get a warranty spare or maybe I’ll just have to buy one, they do at least appear to be quite cheap, haven’t checked the postage yet though ☹️

That’ll teach me for cleaning, if I hadn’t bothered I would have been blissfully unaware.

Baratza customer service is well-regarded and they’re often praised for getting parts reliably. Sad day

This is why I won’t buy a bartaza, they are all plastic
With that said contact customer service, they are known to take good care of their customers

This is so common with them. It’s a poor design.

I’m on my third now. Contact their customer service, and they will likely send you another.

Not sure about the the Encore ESP, but at least on the original Encore, this upper burr holder breaks easily *by design* and not out of “poor design”. I.e., this is designed to be the first part that breaks if the load torque gets too high – i.e., if you get a rock in your beans, instead of your burrs just grinding themselves and the motor to death, this part snaps and is easily/quickly/cheaply replaced.

This is why I just upgraded to a Eureka.

It is a $5 part that you view as a consumable.

Surprised you were getting a usable grind from a carrier this badly damaged.

Just buy the part or if it’s still with warranty they will send you one free of charge – should be under 10 bucks. Just had mine broken after 1 year as well. Baratza send one free of charge but I bought one spare. That’s done specifically not to break the grinder.

Oh this is natural with the encore. Not particularly durable.

I just cleaned mine last week. (Been a while) And I have a crack in the same place. I assumed it was by design because I was able to slot it back in easily.

I’m looking for a replacement now.

Easy, cheap fix. Buy a few to keep on hand.

Just happened to me, order the part first (it’s $10) then after you’ve ordered the part email customer support and ask them to reimburse you. The part shows up quicker and you get your money back

This ring is just too weak…some people say it’s a safety feature…and then they’ll argue that their older encore is still running after 7 years…blah blah
For me it was too fragile for espresso…and that all plastic chamber was a mess and the last few weeks were awful and the grinder was clogging almost all the time…this ring broke two times…on the first time I don’t know exactly what happened…the second time it was probably after grinding a light roast…..
I just gave up on it and fixed it then sold it….I got myself a DF and although it’s not perfect by any means, but things are much better now and I’m satisfied…
