ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (BLOOM) — Mazzaro’s Italian Market, one of the Tampa Bay area’s most iconic markets, is expanding its footprint with the opening of Zagara Gelato, a new scoop shop located directly next door to its longtime location at 3001 22nd Ave. N.
Set to open soon, Zagara Gelato will serve a curated menu of traditional Italian gelato, refreshing fruit granita, and soft Sicilian-style brioche. The shop draws inspiration from centuries of Italian dessert tradition, with gelato made using a slow-churning process that incorporates less air and fat than traditional ice cream, resulting in a denser texture and richer flavor.
In addition to classic gelato, the menu will feature granita, a semi-frozen dessert made from sugar, water, and fruit juice, along with Sicilian brioche, a sweet, pillowy bread typically enjoyed with frozen treats.
Zagara Gelato’s hours will be Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The shop will be closed on Sundays.
The expansion allows Mazzaro’s customers to enjoy a full culinary experience in one visit, from fresh pasta and hot meals to espresso and now, authentic Italian desserts. The new concept was first reported by LocalShops1, a local business advocate group also known for organizing the annual Shopapalooza festival in St. Petersburg.
Mazzaro’s, which has become a destination for locals and tourists alike, is known for its expansive selection of gourmet items including artisan cheeses, cured meats, baked goods, wines, and fresh-made sandwiches. The addition of Zagara Gelato further cements its reputation as a one-stop shop for Italian cuisine.
