NEW YORK – Authenticity, a sense of family, identity, and lifestyle. More than just exquisite dishes. This is what Italian cuisine inspires in those who, even at American tables and restaurants, enjoy a tricolor dish.
Danielle Caminiti, a true ambassador of Italian cuisine in New York and the US, confides this to agricultura.it. She has become a veritable star of Italian cuisine on web (and in reality), author of books (From Courtroom to Cucina) and a guest at events showcasing authentic Italian food. We met her during the Covid era (link): a lawyer by profession, she decided to share her Italian dishes online, thus reaching thousands and thousands of Italian cuisine enthusiasts. Her Italian roots are clearly evident in her dishes, which recall the flavors of her grandmother.
Danielle Caminiti, what does UNESCO recognition for Italian cuisine mean to you?
Italian cuisine being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site is an extraordinary milestone and powerful acknowledgment of what so many of us already know: Italian food isn’t just nourishment. It’s culture, memory, identity and tradition passed down through generations.
How popular is Italian cuisine in the US?

In the U.S., Italian cuisine is incredibly appreciated because it offers comfort and a sense of family and authenticity. Italian-Americans gravitate to favorites like sausage and peppers, chicken parm, and vodka sauce, but we’re also seeing a rise in appreciation for true regional Italian cooking for dishes such as Tuscan ribollita, Sicilian arancini, Roman or Neapolitan pizza, and Pesto alla Genovese. People seem to desire the story behind the dish as much as the dish itself.
What makes it different from other cuisines?
Italian food is beloved not only for its flavors, but for the nostalgic and warm feeling it evokes, and that sense of inclusion – “everyone’s welcome at the table.” Irrespective of whether you grew up with an Italian nonna or not, the cuisine has a way of making you feel like you did.
With your social media channel, thanks also to your book, you’ve helped raise awareness of your ancestors’ cuisine. Is that a source of satisfaction?
I’m grateful to play even a small part in that here in the U.S. in sharing these traditions and keeping the stories behind our food alive. I can’t wait to see how this moment inspires even more people to explore, cook, and celebrate Italian cuisine.
