There’s a joke in here somewhere about this outcome and it being a turkey instead of a chicken … but I’m not going to touch it because I don’t want banned.

Pick off the burnt parts, it might still be raw enough underneath to recook it!

Those grills with almost zero space for charcoal are for hot and fast cooking, hot dogs & burgers.
You’re simply using the worst possible grill to attempt a turkey. A proper weber kettle would of been a much easier cook. Particularly if you used blue tooth temperature probes to keep an eye on the cooking temperature on your phone.
A weber smokey mountain could of done it with you sound asleep until it was time to take the turkey out.
Bottom line, a 40 dollar tail gating grill is really a terrible idea for anything other than small pieces of meat.

A paper plate bro? Lol

Everyone has had a moment where the only right thing to say is, “Who wants to order pizza?”

It might have been fine if the charcoal was on one side and the turkey was placed on the other side.

Less charcoal next time might help regulate the temp bro. Or try and do an indirect with the coals to one side. We’ve all torched something before. Don’t let it discourage you 💪🏼
So find a good charcoal smoker on fb marketplace. Ive bought two for 25 bucks each. Get a charcoal chimney. Make sure you brine the bird night before. Soak your preferred flavoring chips in water night before. My smoked turkey this year was juicy and delicious.

Well, on the plus side, you’ve learned how not to grill a turkey. It’s all up from here.

If you food is getting too hot or charred on the grill an easy save is to pull it and throw it in the oven around 350-400 to finish it off. The outside might be charred but the inside could still need some time to cook. The oven will be a easier way to finish it off and reduce the burning.

It’s not awful but I admit when I first looked I thought you had baked some bread on your bbq

To much coal. Santa has you on tbe naughty list.

If you’re set in using this as a smoker, put coals on one side and use something as a deflector (maybe a firebrick?) to separate coal and food. I know it’s not a ton of space.
YouTube may have some other advice.
One thing I did when I first started on charcoal was wrote down what I did with very detailed notes so I could figure out what I was doing wrong and how I could change things. After five or so cooks, I was comfortable not doing that and knew what I was doing.
Have fun!

Why are the coals so close to the food?
