3 Ingredient Granny Green Beans: Incredible Slow Cooked Flavor
Join Tammy as she makes her famous Granny Green Beans recipe. It is a Southern-style green Bean Recipe that makes canned green beans taste like they are from the garden. You will be amazed at the flavor profile of these green beans. Today, she is also giving new tips and comparing bacon grease and olive oil in this recipe.
Tammy’s Granny Green Beans
3-14.5 oz. cans of green beans, do not drain
1/8 cup cooking oil
1 Tbsp granulated sugar
This will make the best green beans you have ever tasted, but ONLY if you follow the directions carefully. Many people do not cook them down to the caramelization stage and complain that they are sweet. This is because the directions are not followed.
Add three ingredients to a nonstick saucepan. Bring to a boil and continue cooking on high. When water is almost gone, the beans will begin to sizzle. At this point you must stay in kitchen to watch them closely. The oil and sugar will then begin to caramelize in bottom of pot. You will notice the sides of pot becoming brown. Once this begins, take beans, and rub them on sides of pot that has glazing. The juice from the beans will deglaze the pot. Take them off the heat after they have formed a good glaze and you begin to smell it. Put about 1/2 cup water in pot and continue deglazing so caramelization is in beans and not on pot. Smash them a little breaking them apart if desired.
Recipe for 1 Can:
Use 1 Tbsp cooking oil and 1 tsp sugar for every can of green beans. Always use juice from can.
“Follow the directions and it is recommended to watch my video tutorial as well.”– Tammy

I can just open a can of green beans and eat them plain. I always cook bacon and onion together first and then add my green beans with the juice and a little sugar. I turn them down on low and cook for twenty minutes. Boiling can vegetables lose their vitamins. Bring just to a boil and turn down on low to heat or cook with other ingredients. My mom made the best fresh green beans from her garden or my dad's garden because he did all the work. 😂
I'm wonderIng if a sugar substitute could be used?
My mom always used bacon grease and onions in her green beans. Fabulous! I'm 66…but yours sounds good too Blessings
I agree with you 💯%. Bacon grease, sugar, & keep the juice , that's the way my gran made them as well
My mom almost always put sugar and bacon grease in her green beans (and turnips).
SMASHING them up…is cunning. BRILLIANT idea! Thanks CVC!
Vegetarian here no refined sugar tips:
If you don't do the bacon grease due to not eating meat, simply add a smidgen of liquid smoke to replace that "bacon" scent and flavor. I use coconut palm sugar in my kitchen so I replace CVC sugar with that. ALSO I use butter for the oil. AND NOW I am going to SMASH EM. XO
Oh my, that's exactly how I've cooked mine for years. If i don't have bacon grease I use butter. The secret is cooking them down till the the water is out.
Trying today
I'm going to do that tomorrow too. I'm just not a huge fan of the green bean mushroom soup casserole thing. This looks amazing. Thank you Tammy and Chris and Happy Thanksgiving
OOPS ! You lost me when you said sugar. Oh, I AGREE with you ! But, as a diabetic, I am running in the opposite direction !
I would like to use these in a green bean casserole. What is the best way to do that? Without over cooking the beans.
Giving thanks for your sweet family today! We pray your day was surrounded with family and friends, creating cherished memories together.
Thank you! 😘🦃
I just found these!! Making some tomorrow. Thanks!!💜💜💜
My mother plus my aunt's used 🥓 grease, now I'm 74 yrs old I also use bacon grease but I will give the other a try also.
??? Would love know how you still like your new ice machine, please would love the brand and serial number.😂 Please.
I have to stick with the original – olive oil & Del Monte. Tried it with cooking oil & Green Giant not as good as the Tammy Original!
Fan for life!
Will probably try the bacon grease in the future
The comments section says to add water after it has cooked down. You don’t say that on video. Do we add water or not?
Olive oil is not any better for you than bacon grease , both are good but I prefer bacon grease. ❤
I’m 60 years old, and my grannie Williams always cooked her green beans with bacon fat,and teaspoon of sugar. She cooked her down until the liquid was gone. I’ve always cooked mine that way too.
Are these beans good if they’ve been cooked and you warm them up the next day?
I use some liquid and some broth. They're the best green beans ever!
Actually bacon grease is better for you than olive oil. Olive oil is healthy too but bacon grease is healthier. The sugar is not good for you though.
I want to try this! But I think I misunderstood…I thought for the biggest can that you were supposed to put in 1/8 of a cup of oil or grease? Did you only put in a tablespoon?
Salt pepper ? Seasonings ? Thky
I use only butter and salt and cook down.
Best green beans I’ve eaten (besides my mother in law who grew and canned her own). Tammy’s are delicious!!
What type style green bean you use?
I make your green beans recipe but with beef tallow instead and they always come out fantastic! Thank you for sharing the recipe!
