I have been sitting on this tin for a long time. I was missing out!

I love a pilchard over a brisling, so I appreciated the larger size of the Iwashi. This was a quick lunch in between back to back meetings, so I dumped the whole tin into a bowl of microwaved leftover takeout rice and mixed it together. Super tender fish that mixed in easily. More on the tender side vs. the firmer Nuri I’m used to, but not in a bad way by any means (I am usually squeamish with “soft” sardines, but this was not that).

Sauce is sweet and savory, perfect with rice. I sprinkled a bit of sea salt on top and dotted the bowl with Melinda’s honey habanero sauce for a little extra sweet heat. Then I took some kitchen shears to a limp scallion because my doctor says I need to eat more green things.

Overall, I loved this and am very excited to stock up on more. I have their red tin as well and will more than likely eat it exactly like this, though I’m expecting a sweeter sauce there so will probably pair with something vinegary. There was a bit of an aftertaste that I’m not sure I could place, as both the fish and the sauce were new to me, but I didn’t mind it and crushed this bowl in about two minutes.
