My neighbor but this smoker out on the sidewalk ready to trash it so I took it to my backyard. How should I go about cleaning smoker so I can use it?

I would start by getting it super hot on the inside with a nice fire, burn off any of the old crap and leftover food. Then sand down any rust you see and paint it where applicable. Then fire it up again and season it with some cooking oil. Then smoke something on that bad boy!

Clean it out relly well and wire brush it and the grates down well… rub the insides and grates down in olive oil really good. Then have a nice large burnout fire. Good for years..
