Originally a late night hangout and consistently lauded for its Cantonese fare, Great NY Noodletown has been a Chinatown staple for more than 40 years (minus a brief six-month closure for a refresh in 2022). It closes earlier these days, but for consistent, reliable roasted meats, excellent carryout, and of course, terrific noodles, the restaurant marches on.
*Great NY Noodletown opens at 9 a.m. on weekends, making it a less slammed Chinatown option at a time when crowds are lining up for dim sum. The early morning atmosphere is calm and convivial; a worker trims beans at a restaurant table to prepare for the rest of the day’s service, and regulars reminisce over favorite meals spent there with the manager as they pick up takeout orders.
If you decide to go around breakfast time, pair your meal with a trip across the street to the serene Cafe Diem, where you can get a caffeine jolt from a not-too-sweet matcha latte; it’s a nice place to catch up with friends.
